Is the bent steering rod lock washer important to bend back when you reinstall? I changed the tie rods today and when I screwed the new ones on it didn’t line up right with the bent washers so I skipped that part because it didn’t say anything in the video, but now I’m kinda worried that I need to go back and bend them in? Please let me know! Thanks

How are you going to tighten or loosen either tie rod after you just went through the trouble of torquing the nut to almost 50 foot pounds on the knuckle? What are you tightening or loosening since you already have it fasten to the knuckle?

great thank you - nothing about securing the rack to not twist it and break the seals when un/screwing the inner tie rods ?

Never use red locktite for this application. You cannot heat a steering rack so those inners are pretty much permanent now.

Hey Longbow,

So first of all, your volvo repair videos are freaking amazing. I have already watched all of them twice, lol. So I was about to order new tie rod stuff for my 89 Volvo 245 but I don't know if I have a ZF or Cam rack on my car. I know my rack was replaced in the last 5 years according to service records that came with my car. Do you know how I can tell which rack I have? I know you are a busy person with lots going on, but any info would be great:) Thanks!

What’s the class/name/type of that red grease you’re using here?
Cheers

One should be very careful using red thread locker!!! And where you use it at. If surfaces were clean the bond that sets up is almost as good as a weld. The only way to get it to release is to heat 🔥 it up to 500 degrees, and even then it will be hard to unscrew. So think about just where you use permanent thread locker 🤔.

I just spent a ton of cash at a shop to get tie rod inners and outers replaced among other things, and the front end is clacking worse than before. I haven't gotten the alignment yet, but this doesn't feel right. It clacks on slow bumps and slow turns. I should not be getting this car back sounding worse than before.
