That girl probably left there feeling down. You can tell her intent was pure, she seemed so sweet and excited to talk to her.

The real lesson that Maya Angelou taught that young lady is to never meet your idols.

I am a 64 yrs old black woman from Alabama and this brought me to tears for the young woman who was sweet and polite. I will NEVER see Maya the same way again! My experience in life has been that respect is earned as my character is revealed to others.

To quote Maya Angelou herself, ""People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel."
Hypocrite.

Not only did Maya humiliate her...then they ( the other host and the lady who got up to speak after him) went on to make it seem like she had no respect. I pray that sweet soft spoken young lady is living out her dreams today.

If I was the girl, I would have been so embarrassed/humiliated by her initial reaction, I wouldn’t have been able to pay attention to her response to the actual question anymore.

I really hate when people wrongfully correct someone for something that was clearly not intended to be disrespectful. It’s a poor attempt to show off and virtue signal in my opinion…I don’t care that she’s a famous poet. We need to stop treating celebrities as if they’re infallible.

This wasn’t education this is prime proof how the older generation use open disrespect and humiliation to address and so educate the youth .

Respect goes both ways, Maya. That poor girl meant no malice. You could have pulled her aside after the show and corrected her in private. That’s true mentorship that she would have remembered for a lifetime.

Oh poor girl, she literally meant no harm and she was very respectful. The way they then went on to discuss disrespect which obviously would humiliate her even more. 😢

You can tell the young girl's feelings were deeply hurt.

It’s not what Maya Angelou said but it’s how she said it.

After she was scolded, it looks like she wasn't even listening anymore. You just lost one

That's not educating, that's showing pettiness.

"Watch what you say to another human being. Don't be so ready to be rude."

Wishing she'd taken her own advice.

That was not an education: That was a public humiliation.

“Honor your elders”

That’s a *whole* lot easier for her to say. Her elders weren’t mine. And the lesson I’ve learned from mine is that there’s a difference between respect, which is bilateral, and entitlement, which is not. And I have too much respect for myself to lower myself to honoring the self-assumed sense of entitlement of anyone who does not show equal respect to me.

I just felt it was sad because you could tell this young lady was so excited to talk to Angelou and to be publicly humiliated like that. We all make mistakes. I made the mistake when I was younger by calling an adult by their first name. It’s not that my parents didn’t teach me I was a child growing up. My grandmother pulled me to the side and just explained to me how I’m supposed to address adults. I felt like the entire interaction was unnecessary. Especially considering how kids now days are calling teachers bitches, bringing guns to school, etc. the young lady was very poised and respectful in my opinion.
