The UMID Mbook A Pocket PC From 2009

Back in 2009 a Korean start up company set about making the worlds smallest PC and so was born the UMID Mbook. The Mbook was popular enough to have a follow up but sadly that was the last PC UMID were to make. With no European release I had to buy mine from Australia which was very expensive and its small size means that upgrades are not possible (at least not without amazing soldering skills) and as we know SSDs don't last forever....

Can we take a brief moment to appreciate how this channel doesn't use clickbaits? In almost all videos, you can guess what the video will be about by the title, no AI summary, no DeArrow needed. It's such a brief of fresh air

I didn’t know *such* a small „notebook“ existed, very interesting! At roughly that time I was replacing my old PC (Pentium II-300Mhz) with a similar atom-based device, the EeePC 901. I was using it for about 4 years as my only computer (with external monitor, keyboard, mouse) 😁

Thank you for this video! I find these old UMPCs very interesting, but the biggest disadvantage is the over the time degrading battery, that often is hard to find in new or renewed condition. That's why i always end up using my Psion 5mx or my Sharp HC 4200 when i want a mobile device for capturing texts or working with spreadsheets without the distractions of a smartphone... or playing text adventures ;) ... you can buy AA batteries everywhere

This reminds me of the Vye Mini V Ultra S18 from around 2007. It had a super cool swivel screen that would turn the PC into a tablet. I'm not sure where I bought i back in the day, but I probably had to import it from overseas.

Whoa!! I live in Australia and I've never heard of this device. And 700 pounds? That's commitment and dedication in spades. My hat off to you sir! ( If I wore a hat that is. 😀 )

What a lovely little machine, wonder how it would feel with my big sausage fingers. I own a Nanote Next 7" and my ideal would be an N100 or more powerful Sony Vaio P kind of thing, something super-wide enough to allow a more usable keyboard.

Form factor of Japanese electronic dictionaries. It would have been nice to have Windows Mobile 6 on that for battery life. . .

As a fan of netbooks, I really love the size and design of this device! It's so cute and small yet it's a computer running a full OS... At 4.8"? That's just crazy for its time. Even today I find 8" is kinda small for a tablet 😂 Haha. I think this size would be great for running Android OS. If only someone makes something like this today.. 🥺

The newest version (V6.1) of SpinRite is meant to be able to help old SSDs as it used to fix old spinning hard drives

Great video! I have one of these and as you mentioned my battery died also! Do you know a current source of new batteries or if the battery pack can be rebuilt (or is it one that can’t be revived once the voltage goes too low?). Huge flaw in the product if that’s the case. Otherwise it’s an amazing little PC for the size and a fun toy these days!

Quite interested in what you got to say about Mavicas, and I hope you will cover Panasonic attempt at same nearly identical camera.

Sony Mavica cameras actually got interesting backstory, since Mavica name predates digital cameras and was used in analogue floppy format for recording still frames.
I also got quite a collection of digital Sony Mavica cameras(got entire bundle in a single auction) and they all generally work out of the box, they appear to be really durable and higher end models can take alright pictures even if they low resolution.

Cool unit! Would like to see Linux running on it. Am sure a light weight distro would make t run even better than Windows XP.

Loved my Umid. The emmc died and the only way i could run it was from the tf. I would boot DSL on it after that

Those early Atom processors were horrendously slow. I had a gps that used one and ran windows ce. It was torture to use.

I remember seeing these a few years ago and felt they were really cool little devices. However, I like using my retro PC's. And running Windows XP is a no go no matter how much I like it. And all the Linux distros I considered looked like they'd bog the poor little guy down. Then I thought about using DOS + with Lynx etc, or maybe even Win 3.11 + Lynx. In the end though, I just felt the NEC MobilePro 900c was the better choice so stuck with that.

Is it just me, or does that proprietary slot look very similar to micro-USB3?
I absolutely hate laptops which will kill the battery even when "off". The HP Chromebook (the very first one) did that too.
Does the performance improve if you disable the swap file?
