In this video I show you how to make a HOMEMADE minnow trap out of a 2 liter bottle. After I show you how to make the minnow trap we test it out in a tiny creek! I had a lot of fun making this homemade minnow trap. It was very easy and didn't take long to make. It's a very cheap way to do some minnow trapping. Most minnow traps are $10 or more. You can make a minnow trap out of a 2 liter bottle for less than $2. I used bread and cat food for bait. There are a lot of different bait choices. Play around with different types of baits to see what works best for you. If you like DIY give this minnow trap a try. IT WORKS!

I used this tutorial to make minnow traps with the children I'm nannying for, and we had a lot of fun! We're off to test them now. Thank you!

Great idea. My little guys are always wanting to catch minnows whenever I take them fishing. They bring their butterfly nets but only scare the minnows away. They will think I'm so smart. Thanks Fish Hawk.

Quick tip: When poking or cutting holes in plastic heat up a screwdriver or knife with a lighter and it will poke holes into the plasti very eisily.

Awesome video. I just raked some out our steam with my pool net because I didn't want to buy a trap. I'll certainly be making this when I need more going forward. Thanks for sharing.

I must say, this is pretty darn awesome for something made with stuff that most people have laying around the old casa. MacGyver would be proud of ya, son.

It was an awesome trap! I caught so many minnows! I could make the trap myself at 9 years old. This trap also caught four crawdads for me in one day! thanks for the tips

You only need like ONE ROCK tho...

Also I put fishing line through both layers of the plastic and make a handle (no tape) and then when you pull the handle it keeps the top on (Plus you can just hook the handle on something to retrieve it )....AND you can still open it up to get the minnows out when you catch em👌🏼

Gonn try this in Deckers creek. Hopefully I can get some minnows to try them in the mighty, mighty mighty Mon. River. By the looks of that dub V hat, my friend you just might know where that is. Really glad I came across your Channel to sub to. Mountaineers are always free!!!

Next time glue your rocks so they don’t come out when emptying

(...you don't need a hole at the bottom if you don't tape the top also)

When you cut the top part off, if you cut a little lower so that the width of the funnel and the bottom half it fits into are both the exact same diameter you won't have to tape it. When you force the funnel down into the other half it will stretch the outer half and stay quite tightly fitted.
One problem with the bottle concept, the minnows are likely to suffocate quickly with no holes for water to drift through the bottle. I recommend a bunch of slits with a sharp knife or a hot knife.

I made the same kind of trap to drop into the drainage ditch behind my house, except I used one of those half-gallon square-ish water bottles, and I used Froot Loops instead of cat food. When I went out to retrieve the trap about 12 hours later, there were strangely no minnows, but there were a couple of really small sunfish (I think that's what they are), a bigger sunfish that was a little smaller than the palm of my hand, and a baby catfish...but they were all dead. Any idea what could've killed them? The trap was still underwater, although the water is maybe only a couple feet deep. Could there be something toxic to fish in the Froot Loops? Or could it have been too little oxygen in the water that was in the bottle?

I'm making one out of a 1 gallon glass jar with a lid.
I had one I used in the river I paid about $40 shipped for it but a boat caused a wake and must have shook it up against the dock and it broke I pulled it up in a million pieces.
now they are over $60 with shipping I'm not paying that kind of money.
I have a wire mesh one but the shiners in the river are smart they will not go in the wire mesh type you have to use a clear glass one

I'm trying to come up with my own version.
I want one where I can unscrew the jar lid and release the minnows and use it again without having to retape the funnel
