The reason we still have a monarchy here in the UK is because of the neutrality of the position. The Government rules in the Monarch's name, but in order to survive the Monarch wields no political power. The notion would undermine democracy. Our democracy was developed over a long period of time, and it works for us. I don't think an elected President would be a better system, as they would then have political power, and be subject to short term thinking. A monarch gives a stability to our constitution. People disagree of course, but that is how I see it.

The Royals should stay neutral. They strive to bring people together, the Queen’s Covid speech for example. For them to take sides brings division and I think there’s plenty of that in the world right now. The role is always evolving in how it presents itself.

It is the same here in my country the Netherlands. The Monarch has a weekly conversation with the Prime Minister, has to sign every law that passes both Houses of Representatives etc.etc. But neither the Monarch nor the members of the Royal Family are supposed to take political points of view.

Their public appearances truly are planned very VERY carefully. It's impressive how organized they are. Although they've been doing this for a long LONG time.

The monarchy changed after the civil wars in the 17th century. The monarch meets the Prime Minister every week and also has "red boxes" every day. These contain papers of State which are read and signed daily. They can be from most important laws to very minor matters. Charles helped the late Queen doing her boxes in recent years as an introduction to the duties he would have to fulfill every day. These boxes mean that the monarch knows EVERYTHING that goes on and can give advice even though they have no actual power.
