Recall is very important! He wouldn’t have even needed recall nor gotten past you though if you teach him how to walk behind/next to you. Not only does it make more sense to the dog It’s actually much safer for you and them too. If they are infront of you there may be a snake or a car pulling out that you don’t see. Because they are infront of you the only way to be in a position to protect them is to pull on them and make them come back to you. If they’re being reactive pulling back will intensify the behavior. If they aren’t being reactive things like snakes might get to him before you have a chance to try and protect him. Not to mention if anything comes running towards you (friendly or not) it’s 100% normal for your dog to see that as a threat and because they are infront of the pack they see it as their job to protect everyone if they think it’s a threat. When they are next to you it gives you the chance to let them know “no this isn’t a threat let’s keep going about our day” or “yes this is a threat to us we need to protect our selves.” Another upside is that if he’s right next to you he’ll be watching you and see you stop so he won’t need a recall word he’ll just stop right with you. Because he can watch you while he’s next to or behind you this allows you to communicate with him with only body language and without having to pull on him. Walking this way actually provides more mental stimulation to them as well so it’s more fun for them and they can get tired quicker. If he’s having to think about where he’s walking and putting his body and eat hing you for cues then it’s much more stimulation then just watching where he’s walking. In addition to this he also don’t feel like he has to worry about things if he knows you’re infront doing that. He doesn’t have to be looking for threats or calculating where to go next because he can just watch you. On top of all this is better for your back and arms and his spine and neck. It’s super easy for them to accidentally pull on the leash because they don’t measure it down to the exact inch so they get distracted and don’t realize how far out they are and accidentally pull which one time most likely won’t do any damage to either of you but the repetitive motion (even one that doesn’t feel very hard) can do damage to both of you. When they are next to you is so much easier for them to match your pace since they can see you. It really does make for a more relaxing and fun walk for both of you. Knowing he’s safe that you can protect him from any danger without having to reel him back in like a fish to a safe spot and for him knowing he doesn’t have to make decisions he’s just there for fun. I hope this helped and if you would like any more information just let me know! Have a good day with this handsome man.
