Lavrio extends to the southeast of Athens. The area reveals traces of inhabitation since the Neolithic period, as people have always been attracted by its rich mineral subsoil. The city of Lavrio was founded in the late 19th century by European miners. Today in Lavrio live around 10,000-11,000 people, while in summer time the population of the wider area increases significantly due to the many holiday houses. Until 20 years ago, Lavrio was a purely industrial city, with a population of over 20,000 inhabitants. Every point of Lavreotiki, whether inside the city of Lavrio or outside, has something important to show about the Greek industrial and architectural development; a visit to Lavrio is very educational for the Greek cultural development from antiquity to the present day. Today we will take a short walk on the coastal road of Lavrio where people come together in the cafes and taverns of the area, passing through the main square and the fish market with the ouzeri.
