Inga Petry, the star of the video, is now fighting cancer. If you read the video description of ‘Nothing to Declare’, you can find a link to a fund her family has set up to help her. Please consider donating and maybe upvote this comment so others can see too.

MGMT is worth a deep dive. They are probably the most interesting band going currently. They have chosen a strange but wonderful path that sees them reinvent themselves over and over again with varying degrees of success. I think it's commendable. Their first album is damn near perfect (Oracular Spectacular) and it brought them instant success. Their second album (Congratulations) is a masterpiece in my eyes and it's nothing like the first album. I'm sure their label was unhappy about that. Loss of Life is revealing yet another side of MGMT. I love it.

They are masters - their best work exists beyond the “hits”

Hi Justin,

Jim's son here. Was so lovely to hear you sing that. You did a fantastic job. Maybe a little episode on that song? (If you don't ask you don't get.) My dad has passed now (Nearly 10 years ago), but he always appreciated your vocal chops - and the songwriting!!

My band CITIZENS! used to rehearse underneath you at a rehearsal space in Putney, the owner of which was always saying how lovely and wonderful you all were.

I have two young children now so don't gig much or consume much pop culture at the moment (I'm looking forward to that ending sometime in....let's say 2027) but I really enjoyed this episode and will definitely watch some more.

This is a strange old Youtube message isn't it? I don't normally write these kind of things but I really loved hearing you sing that and it was lovely how you sequed into it. I may be wrong but I'm not sure my dad was a direct influence on MGMT, but then again....who knows.

Keep fighting the good fight

MGMT have always done their own thing, never being bothered if they are successful or not. Totally genuine with it as well. Congratulations is one of the most interesting and imaginative albums ever made imo.

I recall going to see MGMT in the early days. There was a girl at the show crying because she only knew the big hits and was overwhelmed at how weird the rest of their music was. It was like she was terrified of artists. It was like a horror show for her.

This definitely reminded me of Elliott Smith from the get go, as we say here. Love the channel and the kind, honest reviews of songs. You don't have to be cruel to be truthful, or kind for that matter, kids, and cool Jesus in particular.

Justin's expression @5:55 and the poster for Amelie ❤❤❤(as yet to be created exploding heart emoji)

Subscribing to this channel has done wonders for my mental health. Hearing new music that I may not have otherwise heard, and finding out that there are still young artists putting out quality, organic music, written from the human heart and performed with genuine soul - and that there's an audience for it - THAT gives me hope.
Thank you Justin Hawkins! ☮💙

The thing about MGMT is that no two songs are similar, really. They play in a LOT of different genres of music, often on the same album. Some of it lands, some of it doesn't, but it's absolutely a band worth exploring sometime, as there aren't a lot of bands who have no fear to explore that way, as many pick a "sound" and stick with it in order to cement an "identity" in the market - and they don't. This has probably cost them the kind of "mega-success" they *could* have had if they had just stuck with making "Time to Pretend" or "Kids" over and over again - but instead, they just follow their own muse, which I have tons of respect for - and when their stuff *does* land, it's brilliant. But even the tracks that don't are always interesting.

Their album Congratulations is a favourite although underrated by their pop fans. because it didn't follow on from their hit singles.
Its much more like this, psychedelic and wistful

MGMT is an incredible duo. They've made pretty much every song conceivable. Hit an miss but when they get it right, it's magic.

I saw it months ago, and I'm a fan of MGMT. Time to Pretend is a fave. You do such a good job of appreciating all the aspects of this art. Well done, indeed, to you and to MGMT.

My favourite band of the last 20 years! They did a live album called 11.11.11 which is all material that has never appeared on their studio albums! Awesome stuff
