Why No One Really Cares About Lightyear

I am the Last Living Cartoon and this is the story of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command - space ranger, toy, and movie star voiced by Captain America. Disney and Pixar have rebooted this concept for an origin story, but does anyone really care?

I wish this movie had embraced the campy, retro sci-fi elements that Buzz was obviously inspired by, instead of being like diet Aliens

I think the reason so many people prefer the Star Command show to this movie is because Star Command actually feels like an in-universe show-within-a-show that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy, whereas this movie doesn't.

This movie starts out saying that this is the movie Andy saw in 1995 that inspired him to get the Buzz Lightyear toy, but this doesn't feel like a nineties sci-fi movie, it feels like a 2020s sci-fi movie. It also tries to play itself seriously, even though I think it would've worked better as a silly and campy throwback to classic sci-fi films.

I personally headcanon that this is an in-universe modern gritty reboot of the nineties Buzz Lightyear franchise, which Andy saw as an adult and didn't like.

This sounds like a man at 1am rambling about something he just watched, then looked at Twitter, and then turned on the mic and went. I mean this in the best way possible.

While I'm not mad that Zurg was future Buzz in this film, I think the Lego Movie 2 did this story beat better. Though in that case the surprise was less about Rex being future Emmet, and more the "villains" only looked that way through actions not intent, the playful acts of a young girl misinterpreted as malice by a young boy. I'm also tired of twist villains being in every story. Is it too much to ask for a compelling character who is evil? Most of the twist villains feel like two different characters before and after the twist (cough) Prince Hans (cough).

I honestly can’t even tell what’s satirical and what isn’t anymore after that intro. I can see literal smoke coming from my fried brain

I watched this and Thor Love and Thunder as a double feature, and it sure was a fluffy, unchallenging night at the movies. Everything, Everywhere, All at Once remains the best movie of the year.

I agree with the sentiment of "the title intro says this is the movie Andy saw in the 90s that made him love Buzz Lightyear but this definitely does not feel like that movie". It's not even close. And I'd go so far as to say it could never be, because that movie would never get funded today. It's an okay movie, but it's caught between the things it wanted to be. I have no nostalgia for Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, but at least that show seemed to know what it wanted to be, and then jumped in with both feet.

*Zurg:* Surrender, Buzz! I have won.
*Buzz Lightyear:* No. I never give in. You killed my father.
*Zurg:* No... I am BUZZ LIGHTYEAR
*Buzz Lightyear:* No. I'm the real Buzz Lightyear.
*Zurg:* I'm Buzz Lightyear
*Buzz Lightyear:* I'm Buzz Lightyear
*Sox:* So, who's the real Buzz?
*Buzz Lightyear and Zurg:* I AM!

I'm so glad my bill cipher flipping the bird animation still gets used from time to time.

I am one of the clowns who actually liked the cartoon. It was fun and had a whole bunch of actors that I love playing against their type. It was the only time I’m ever going to see Craig Ferguson play a vampire.

So, I feel like I need to make a correction in regards to Star Command. I wanna clarify I did not grow up on the cartoon (I was a CN child), but I do think this context is important before piling it as just a mere "shameless cash grab". (that dishonor is more befitting to the Lilo and Stitch series anyway)

John Lasseter and the rest of Pixar (as well as possibly Disney) absolutely loathed this show. They did not like the fun, campy nature of it, as it was written by some of the people responsible for the Earthworm Jim cartoon and the Aladdin series. They were actually pretty good at making tie-in shows to existing movies, and they would later make Kim Possible. These were people with prior experience that were actually trying, even if it wasn't perfect.

Also a "blip of the radar", my guy…… there was a whoooole deviantArt cult dedicated to NOS-4A2. He was the Onceler before the Onceler came along. I would struggle to say this was a blip amongst fans, because it certainly made an impact with thirsty girls.

Oooh, I know why nobody really cares about Lightyear! It's because he may be Lightyear, but he's certainly not Buzz!

I actually did enjoy Buzz Lightyear of Star Command as a kid.

I want to see this movie because it looks like a fun movie that I can share with anyone. I do agree that a lot of the online discussion about entertainment for all ages is extremely insufferable and really takes the fun out of enjoying media.

Buzz lightyear of Star Command was great and imaginative
And had a great cast of characters that I grown to love
And it knew it was being cliche at times and it made fun of itself for it

I do love the implication that Buzz Lightyear of Star Command exists in-universe and was sponsored by Pizza Planet. Honestly, I don't much care one way or the other about Lightyear, but I would eat up an in-universe documentary about the meteoric rise of the Buzz Lightyear brand and perhaps even its steady decline.

As someone who almost exclusively watches the non-review style content on this channel, the comment section are definitely a lot less enjoyable here. The vibes are in shambles.

No we did not gaslighted ourselves to love the star command movie. Some people remember watching it and actually enjoyed.During childhood and nowdays. The characters are memorable. Maybe not their name but their characteristics and their design. They're way better than human side characters in lightyear.Just because YOU didnt watched it or liked it doesnt mean everyone else are lying.
