I was studying MBCHB last year at the university of Stellenbosch. Not because I was interested in the health sciences but because the society instilled that mindset. But to me, being a mathematical scientist of some sort was always a dream. I thought about it all, and one thing qualified as the best option for me: Actuarial Science which I have began studying this year at university of Johannesburg. All I can say is that I disappointed my family by changing from medicine to actuarial science. I'm happy and I'm giving it my all as opposed to when I was studying medicine.

I am a proud father of a son doing engineering at Wits. The course is tough (chowing according to him) but I have seen how being challenged by the course has broadened his thinking and academic skills.

Matriculated in 2009. Students should not let their marks limit their horizons, the world is changing and needs agile people. Kindly encourage students to also look into the National Scarce Skills List,

A career in Tech makes so much sense. The entry level positions offer very competitive salaries and some students get job offers while in their final year!!! But beware, it is hard however worth it.

Im a business analyst by profession. Got a Barcherlos degree in IT: Business Applications. This is one of the most flexible courses one can look into. Its so broad and enjoyable. You can venture into Project Management, Software Developer, Data Science, Financial Information Systems, Change Management and Applied Mathematics. I'm now at Master's level and my dissertation mainly focuses on AI robotics. Most interviews i've been into there isnt much competitions. Mostly there would be 3 to 4 people. Good thing is that you can start at a level of Diploma.

I'm currently a matric student and feel so pressured by the expectations of my parents. The introduction already makes me feel at ease❤😊

Hi Gift. Thank you for your video. As someone who did really well in high school and is currently enrolled in BEng, I started having some serious doubts before starting varsity, particularly because of the mindset that "smart" people should be going into medicine. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I definitely have that mindset that medicine is the ultimate degree and everything outside of it "just is." So thank you. I definitely needed to hear this message. I will go study BEng this year, and maybe if I decide I really don't like it I will try to go into medicine or even something else.

I wanted to do medicine because of the stigma. Am a victime. But I shifted my attention to Acturial science in Kenya. I agree with you gift. The mindset should change.

Excellent video, sir! I strongly encourage to the matriculants to understand yourself first and your interests. Think about what type of work environment you want to work in. Understand also that you'll never truly know what your future job will be like until you get there. Do as much research as you can on the potential careers. The best thing you can do is ask people in those careers what their job is like. Ask them what they like and dislike about their jobs.
