Nissan is testing a groundbreaking automotive paint designed to reduce a vehicle's cabin temperature during summer and decrease the energy usage of the air-conditioning system. Developed in collaboration with Radi-Cool, a specialist in radiative cooling products, this paint incorporates metamaterial, synthetic composite materials with structures that possess unique properties.

The project aligns with Nissan's goal of creating innovative solutions for a cleaner, more sustainable society. In November 2023, Nissan began a 12-month feasibility trial at Tokyo International Air Terminal at Haneda. Partnering with Japan Airport Terminal Company, Limited, Radi-Cool Japan, and All Nippon Airways airport service, Nissan applied the cool paint to a Nissan NV100 service vehicle operated by All Nippon Airways.

Haneda airport, with its extensive open tarmac, provided an ideal environment to evaluate the paint's performance under high temperatures. Initial results are promising, showing up to a 21.6-degree Fahrenheit reduction in exterior surface temperatures and up to a 9-degree Fahrenheit cooler interior compared to traditional automotive paint.

The paint's cooling performance is most noticeable when a vehicle is parked in the sun for long periods, resulting in a more pleasant cabin and reduced air-conditioning usage. This improvement can enhance engine efficiency or, in electric vehicles, extend battery life.

Led by Dr. Susumu Miura, Nissan's development team has created a paint incorporating two microstructure particles that reflect near-infrared rays and create electromagnetic waves to redirect energy away from the vehicle. This innovative paint could significantly benefit light commercial vehicles like vans, trucks, and ambulances.

what frequency are the electro-magnetic waves ? b/c if memory serves, the EM spectrum is regulated against random mobile transmitters when ever the sun comes out ?

This isn't groundbreaking. The secret metamaterial is barium sulfate microspheres. You can make this stuff at home with a mixer and stuff from walmart and amazon. The ratio is 2:2:1:2. Very easy to measure.
