Scream Patch Tutorial

A "Scream Synthesis" patch technique, utilizing audio-rate FM and feedback.

Audio begins at 1:00. It's scary stuff. Heads up.

This video was originally filmed and posted to Vimeo in 2013, and is being re-posted here for ease of sharing.

The patch was inspired by a post Grant Richter made on the MW forum about the Malekko Anti-Oscillator's FM normalizations alongside that module's release in 2009, specifically the quote:

"When you feed back the output to the input of most any circuit, you form chaotic functions. Chaotic functions usually "bifircate", that is split in two. The places where the chaos is momentarily stable are called "attractors", when you hear frequency warbling or jumping, strange instabilities, it is switching between attractors at an audible rate, this is very common in nature, so if you hear any wounded animal sounds or scarier things, we are just copying the math from mother nature."

The entire post can be found here:

Take this technique and make something cool with it!

Discovered this in time to scare my kids for Halloween! I don't have an MMG, but I do have a QPAS and was able to approximate this (I think) by using the pressure CV to mix between the LP and HP outs as I imagine is happening in the MMG. Really cool.

Very cool patch and great that you started your own channel. Pete, you have such a beautiful narrator voice, will we hear it in later videos?

This patch got me into Eurorack and I still don't have the right modules 😂

Lol 😂 that is actually a pretty scary sound. It is like The Exorcists meets a cat fight in heat.

Hello. Could you help me in this matter? I work in Bitwig, with the PolyGrid plugin, I need a scream sound in the track, but I don't want to use sampled, I want to synthesize. I understand correctly that I need to take two oscillators so that one of them controls the frequency of the other, then use filters, etc., but I don't understand how to make feedback? If it's not difficult, you can write the process of how to make the synthesis of screams in DAW. My respect to you! Thank you.

This is amazing! Is there a way to do this in VCV or even better Ableton? 😂
