Mount the solenoid horizontally. Why? Because hitting a bump can cause the solenoid to open the high Amp power connection to the motor which you don’t want to happen. That doesn’t happen if the axis of the solenoid is horizontal. And, the diode across the solenoid coil prevents a back flow of high voltage which will damage the system. Last pointer; when you tighten the nuts and cap screws on the large connection lugs use two wrenches. These connections have to be tight. Using only one wrench puts enough stress on the lugs to damage them.
