Playing One by U2 is WAY More Fun Than I Thought!

I always suspected that the open chords weren't the correct answer when it comes to The Edge's guitar noodles in U2's One. Now that I know the answer, I like his guitar work even more.

I bet there are 5 videos teaching this song on YouTube and this one is already the best one. Nice job Ryan. 👍🏼

The perfect teaching video to play the song a bit closer to the record than I previously could, thank you!

The hammer-on guitar part was originated by producer Daniel Lanois. Per Wikipedia: "While working with Lanois in the studio on a vocal overdub, Bono suggested Lanois "play a little guitar part to try and juice [him] up". Lanois subsequently took Bono's green Gretsch guitar and played a hammer-on part that was included in the final version of the song."

Great video man 🤘🏼💙
I'm learning this for a party band I joined recently and this is the best breakdown of the guitar parts I've seen 🙏🏼 Thanks so much!

Loved how you explained it in such a simple yet fun way!

There’s more going on in that chorus too, the bass note walks down from the C to the Am with the hammer ons and pull offs on the B string there as well. Then once you get into verse 2&3 the guitars are layered up massively with lovely little note bend riff and the chords get more percussive. It’s actually a very interesting song to play from start to finish once you delve into it.

One of my all time faves, Ryan. Been rocking those open chords for years but looking forward to trying this approach over the weekend. Sounds great.

First time caller. Those were the best voicings I've seen. They sound accurate. I used to play/sing this in a band and I worked out the outro guitar part w/ echo. Super cool triads and I think it is behind the beat which is a little more tricky. Edge is truly a musical scientist. That's what Bono calls him.

Hey Ryan! Didn't know you had a YouTube channel! I remember your studio in Lafayette! You're a really good teacher!

I play that riff using A, D and G strings only, climbing to higher frets all the time. Start from the seventh fret, drop to a fifth fret on a second chord, climb to seventh on a third and then climb to a ninth fret on the fourth chord. Sounds good.

This was "one" of the first songs I learned on guitar but was a dumbed down version. This lesson has me wanting to re learn it in a lot cooler way. I love the pick guard on your strat!

OK, now this is nuts. I've got "One" going on as an earworm, right? I pop open YT's main page, because I don't wanna work, but!!! Here's your vid, top row, right in the middle!!! You sir, have slaked my thirst for "One!" Time to break out my black Strat...
