Steven Weinberg - How Do Particles Explain the Cosmos?

preview_player
Показать описание

The cosmos is vast, the largest stuff that exists. Particles are tiny, the smallest stuff that exists. Yet the particles compose the cosmos; there is nothing in the cosmos other than the particles, and the fields and forces that are associated with them. How does the whole system composed of cosmos and particles work?

Steven Weinberg is an American theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate in Physics for his contributions to the unification of the weak force and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particles.

Closer To Truth, hosted by Robert Lawrence Kuhn and directed by Peter Getzels, presents the world’s greatest thinkers exploring humanity’s deepest questions. Discover fundamental issues of existence. Engage new and diverse ways of thinking. Appreciate intense debates. Share your own opinions. Seek your own answers.

Hello from Australia. 🇦🇺. I'm a rancher and waterwell driller from the south who is incredibly enthralled with this existence more every day, much thanks to learning more about these subjects.

Always a pleasure to listen to the great mind of Steven Weinberg

If Steven Weinberg wasn't a physicist he would have made a great baseball announcer. Awesome, friendly voice. He looks like Grandpa from the Simpsons.

An Interesting discussion trying to connect the largest stuff (the Cosmos) with the tiniest one (the particles). Well done CTT for bringing this great physicist and thinker who passed away some years ago, he usually tends to express the truth in his way. The point is that although we learned much, but we are still too far from understanding the "truth" of the particles and the "truth" of the Cosmos at large. We are still busy searching for the "Truth" and for the "Origin".

Steven Weinberg, your first 2 minutes describe what happens when you walk with sheer intention for a long time in summer and spring. This is the mystic of life modern folks can't comprehend and fully understand.

Thanks to Robert for inviting Steven Weinberg.

Steven Weinberg, a theoretical physicist, used his mathematical prowess to impress upon us the theories considered
today, that best describes how our physical universe works. This video is a reminder of the genius this man was.

Truly amazing our accomplishments in cosmology and what we're able to do with quantum mechanical calculations. Steven Weinbergs book "The First Three Minutes, "which is now nearly 50 years old, is still very good in giving one an understanding of the early universe.

I'M HAPPY THAT THE HIGGS IS BEING STUDIED, AND I'M HAPPY THAT L.I.G.O. WAS CONSTRUCTED. REST IN PEACE, PROFFESSOR STEPHEN WEINBURG.❤

Before thinking of PREDICTING future events or POSTDICTING past events we must clearly SEPARATE the meanings of:

assumption, conjecture, postulate, hypothesis, theory, extrapolation, hope, expectation, projection, anticipation, guess, estimate and WHATELSE.

"In the cosmic theatre, particles are the actors, their interactions pen the script, and the cosmos is their stage." - Inspired by Steven Weinberg

Such a clear explanation! Genius. Thank you.

Newtonian mechanics including Newtonian gravity IS a "limit case" of General Relativity.
BUT
The Classical Physics "framework" is NOT a "limit case" of the Quantum Physics framework.

General Relativity is a theory within the Classical physics framework. To "unify" it with theories in the Quantum Framework (standard model, QFT, QED, QCD etc.) we first need to "unify" the Classical Framework
with the Quantum Framework. That is, we would ideally need to find a framework that has both: the
quantum and the classical frameworks as different limit cases (each emerging as approximations under certain different limiting conditions).

Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state. Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started, wait. The earth began to cool, the autotrophs began to drool, Neanderthals developed tools, we built a wall (we built the pyramids), math, science, history, unraveling the mysteries. That all started with the big bang. BANG!
