I really like the take part community and one thing that blew my mind growing was planned obsolescence. Thank god that is going away. And while I love mindfulness of the fact that we all live on an irreplaceable earth. I am really glad we are thinking in terms of sustainability, but I also have to say that it so easy to sublimate a global cause in lieu of neccesary personal growth in other areas. I find many Zealots fit into this category. In the end innovation will give the big solutions.

I think the most valid point of living smaller is to recognize that stuff is not life or status its just stuff. Having good taste is nice but to my mind being excessive in what you "Need" emotionally is really repellent. I do not judge but if the whole life style is needy then the stuff usually acts as a barrier to closeness with people. but in the end its about stuff as toys and tools only and then innovations to provide sustainable feed stock for food and manufacturing and energy.

Floating shelves work miracles. In tiny apartments that need miracles.

A local sustainable supply chain cannot be created WHEN there are disasters because it takes time to build and disaster means emergency. WHEN there are resource issues? There are already. But even if there weren't, is the right time when no more is available? Innovation will bring no solution to consumerism and the waste of resources going on, nor to the growing concern of waste management. Living small and simple is not "regressing our standard of living" but resizing it to what it should be.

I loved this video, but what I caution against is ecologically driven ascetic living followed on by self righteous preaching and a desire to legislate others behavior to be "right" living. I do not think global supply chains will ever go away but I would be thrilled if on top or underneath that we created a local sustainable supply chain so when there are disasters or problems or resource issues most things can be done locally. But innovation is the key here not regressing our standard of living.
