Coronavirus: Jacinda Ardern says ‘We have won the battle’ in New Zealand on community transmissions

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on April 27, 2020, that the country had won its battle against widespread undetected coronavirus community transmission. But warning there was no certainty about when all transmission can be eliminated, Ardern also said New Zealanders must remain cautious.

I am originally from the UK and moved to NZ 12 years ago.... How pleased I am to be here now! When level 4 (complete lock-down) was announced so quickly, I thought it was an over reaction, how wrong I was. Yes, an isolated country with a small population makes battling COVID19 easier, however it does not make the decision to lock-down any easier. Jacinda Adhern has been bold, listened to science, told the truth, provided financial assistance, been empathetic and has united her "team of 5 million". She is a fantastic leader, such a shame there are not more like her.

I didn’t vote for her and have not been a fan of her’s till the lockdown began. It couldn’t of been the best time for NZ to have a PM like her. No doubt she saved many lives and we all owe her for that. I can’t imagine how life in NZ would of been if national was in charge. For the first time I’ll be voting Labour this year.

We have a free public health system. We share no borders. Low population that spans more space than England/Scotland/Wales. Have a great leader. Quick strong action, lots of testing and contact tracing. And caring about our neighbors, out communities and country. Now hopefully we can help other nations too.

As a New Zealander I can say one of the reason's we have cautious optimism is because we don't have an arrogant, ignorant buffoon leading our country through this pandemic. We have a leader who actually cares about people.

Surely SCMP hasn't deliberately misquoted Ardern to attract clicks? She said "that battle, " not "the battle." The difference in nuance is small but important.

Wow, I am so happy for New Zealand and I think Ardern derserves so many props for being a great PM. Australia (where I live) is going well too, but I think the Australian people and our medical professionals deserve the credit for that, not our politicians.
