During the convention season, games media often bursts with predictions about new trends and technology that will be the future of gaming - but many of those bold predictions never come to pass. Meanwhile, the small changes that don't make industry headlines have been building up, and right now in 2015 four patterns are clear.

NOTICE: We made serious errors in our choice of maps and language. These include implying that North Korea and South Korea are one country and that Taiwan is a part of China.

We apologize sincerely for these errors. We will do better in the future and thank our audience for their willingness to confront us on these issues.

What I want in the future is an Extra Credits Green Square game plush.

a note about spinoffs:
everone should look at majora's mask for inspiration.
its (essentially) a spinoff title that recycles a number of assets, and as a result they could be much more experimental and daring as to what it did. the result was a really unique game that certainly looked like ocarina of time but really did not feel like it.

Elder Scrolls 6 will save time and money during development by re-using several things from skyrim. you will find many of the city guards are very vocal about their last career and what ended it.

Not the most exciting changes but great analysis of the smaller changes that will shape the near future of gaming. Thumbs up!

Rewatching this in 2021 and it's eerie how many of these predictions are so accurate. The Switch definitely did a lot for prediction #2.

Seems like these were predictions along the lines of "current trends will continue".

Unbelievably accurate.
We're living their predictions in 2018.

Dear Extra Credit, just letting you know the image use in time line 2:01-2:05 is an inaccurate presentation of China because Taiwan and China are separate countries.

When they mentioned using assets from previous games while making a new one, all I could think was: "Oh, so they want people to do what Call of Duty and Battlefield have been doing already for years?"

I don't mind reused assets when used properly. The first example where reused assets really slapped me in the face with a negative impact was Call of Duty Ghosts. In the multiplayer I noticed asset, after asset, after asset, that was outright lifted from previous titles and just plunked down with few, if any, changes made to them. I shouldn't recognize a restaurant in an installment of your game series 7 years later, especially when the ladders are still in the same places, in both of the stages you put it in.

Since when was re-using assets a change?

Hasn't that been happening since forever?

Hey Extra Credits, I was wondering if you would ever do an episode on Let's Plays and their growing presence in the gaming industry. From many Indie developers and the rare AAA company paying well known Let's Players to advertise their game at a better price then a commercial would do (Shovel Knight, Dead Space 3) sll the way to how certain games can lose almost all momentum and sales plummet due to most people opting to watch an LP of it rather than play it themselves. I was wondering what your guys take on the whole situation was and how you think some of the issues that this growing pass time could be fixed.

Unity has extremely good licensing terms, especially for Indie devs. I mean, you don't have to pay at all until you make 100k a year...

The reference at 3:48 is amazing.

Putting 7 mtg cards in the graveyard to activate the "threshold" ability. This kind of thing is seriously my favorite part of your videos. I wonder how many people got the reference though.

I honestly believe gamers sometimes tend to undervalue the positive influence mobile games can have. I chalk this reason primarily up to the misuse of microtransactions.

Just wanted to say thanks for another episode and That I think you guys did a really good job at owning up to an issue that some of your viewers had about location names/visual representations. The list is longer of people who wouldn't do that, and it shows integrity. Keep being awesome! :D
