CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dreading her impending nuptials, Yentl (Barbra Streisand) sings "Tomorrow Night."

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Barbra Streisand's directorial debut, Yentl, is a musical adaptation of a story by the beloved Jewish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer. Yentl (Streisand) is a young woman who wants nothing more than to study religious scripture. She is denied that possibility because she is a woman. She moves, passes herself off as a male named Anshel, and then begins her studies. She becomes close to fellow student Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin), eventually falling in love with him, although she can not reveal her true self as she would then be expelled. Avigdor is in love with Hadass (Amy Irving), but religious law forbids him from marrying her. Avigdor attempts to fix Anshel up with Hadass, leading to Hadass falling in love with Anshel. Yentl received four Academy Award nominations, including two Best Song nods.

To this day, Yentl is among my favorite movies of all time. It's one of those films that you get obsessed with in your youth because it speaks to something inside you. And then you feel like it had a profound impact on your life when you get older. At least, that's how it feels to me. Thank you, Miss Streisand.

I am not Jewish, but I totally dig everything about this movie. And especially Barbra <3 She is magnificent in everything she does. What a talented woman!

I remember watching this movie as a kid and, I don't know how come, I remembered it as a story about two lesbians (Yentl and the bride) trying to be together in conservative times. Yentl had to dress like a man for them to get married. It all made sense in my memory.
...Imagine my surprise when I actually watched it after years XD How could I forget Mandy Patinkin???

3:40 is perfect. The rising action of the movie is superb and that song just nails the moment. Just saw this on TCM the other day. Recorded and saw it twice. I'm going to buy it to. Such a good movie. Tomorrow Night!

1:41 "I could run away, I could leave without a trace. Go anywhere or anyplace where no one knows my face. As a woman or a man, I don't know, just so I can run away, run away..." 🎶

I enjoyed Yentl quite a bit - and the soundtrack is spectacular - but I think Streisand made a critical mistake in wearing a wig rather than cutting her hair, which had the effect of making her seem more feminine than was necessary. As committed as she was to getting this film made, attentive as she is to details, and given all the other sacrifices she made for her labor of love, cutting off her hair seems like it would have been a relatively small price to pay for considerably more realism.
