Inkjet Printer Carriage Jumps Erratically - Drive System Problem

For an #HP #Epson #Canon or #Brother #inkjet #printer which exhibits severe #vibration or jumping as the #printers #carriage traverses back and forth, there is either a electrical or mechanical problem with the carriage drive. In the majority of cases the #FPC (or #flexible #printed #circuit) cable, also known as the #trailing #cable, may have #failed due to internally #broken wire runs and will need to be replaced. It is also possible the #drive #gears connected to the drive #belt are broken, or may have broken teeth, causing the carriage #assembly to #misstep and jump #erratically.

It is suggested to check the following items:

1. Select the Access Cartridges feature at the control panel or software to see if the carriage assembly moves into the proper maintenance position.
2. If so, then remove power from printer leaving the carriage/cartridges in the maintenance position.
3. Disconnect and reseat the FPC Cable’s ZIF (zero insertion force) cable connection from carriage – this will help ensure electrical connectivity between main board and carriage is correct.
4. Inspect Drive Gear belt which extends the entire width of the printer – verify the drive gear at one side is not damaged. Replace gear assembly if damage is observed.
5. Apply power to printer and retest to see if problem has been corrected.
6. If not, then replace carriage/trailing cable and/or belt drive gear assembly.

NOTE 1: For minor breaks in the FPC (flexible printed circuit) cable you may also observe severe #photo or #document output vertical lines or banding in printed output.

NOTE 2: The "Protected Cartridge Installed" error on HP printers usually indicates that the printer has recognized the ink cartridge as being previously used in another printer or being restricted for use in your current region. This can occur even with original cartridges due to the printer's cartridge protection feature or due to a mismatch between the cartridge's regional coding and your printer's region setting. If your standard (or high capacity), #refilled or aftermarket #HP series ink cartridge is displaying an error message such as: ' #Protected #Cartridge #Installed ' or ‘the #indicated cartridge can only be used in the #printer that initially used it and must be replaced’, etc., then the HP ink cartridge has been permanently #disabled for use in all printers, except for the original printer that it was first installed into.

NOTE 3: For HP printers that display ink or printer system error messages such as “ #incompatible cartridge”, “cartridge #problem” or “ #Ink #System #Failure” then it is possible that a newer version of HP printer #firmware may have been installed onto your printer and the cartridge #chip or #chips are now #locked out, or there is not enough ink inside the cartridge to support print operations.
