Which is more sustainable: an apple form Belgium or an organic apple from New Zealand, a Dutch greenhouse tomato or one grown in Spanish soil, coffee from organic plantations in Brazil or from traditional farms in Ethiopia?

Sustainable food isn’t only about the food itself, it’s also about a combination of factors including how the food is produced, distributed, packaged and consumed.

Measuring agricultural sustainability in a meaningful way is far from simple, encompassing agronomic, environmental, and socio-economic factors. Balance needs to be struck between simplistic easy to use and more complex and holistic systems.
