Psychiatric hospitals face potential coronavirus outbreaks amid unique challenges

The coronavirus is hitting patients and staff at psychiatric facilities across the U.S., and caring for this population comes with unique challenges during a pandemic. Catherine Herridge reports on Western State Hospital in Washington, where there have been 34 confirmed cases. Some staff members are concerned the hospital isn't taking the virus seriously enough.

My heart dies repeatedly thinking about our nations psych hospitals. If you think New York’s ER scenes are chaotic brace yourselves Smdh Mental Health patient are human life too. Human Rights protection is needed immediately for patients and staff

Everyone saying this is fake news is wrong. And that thinking is dangerous. My entire family works at western state hospital. They really don't care about their staff there. Even when some staff show symptoms they send them home for 3 days to get tested they come back on the fourth day and find out their results are positive only after they get to work on the 4th or 5th day. They have little supplies and float staff from ward to ward. They weren't taking Covid19 seriously at all and the patients and staff are suffering for it. I hope my comment doesn't cause any retaliation on my family.

If it interferes with interpersonal relationships and or work/quality of living it’s mental health. I didn’t even believe in psychiatry until I was diagnosed. Yes, it is a real thing.

This goes for all mental hospitals... I hope the patients get the care they need. I wonder what their schedules are like... Do they do group therapies still? Can't imagine what they do for visitations they must do stuff over webcam with staffs computers and extra times on the phone. Hope no one slips under their care must be truly frightening especially if rooms are shared.

I finished my clinicals at a psychiatric hospital a couple weeks ago and well I expected this. The staff did not take the virus seriously and were rolling there eyes at any precautions being put into place. They never cleaned after a session even though they could it was horrible

There's 4-6 patients per room, many are more crowded than prisons. I would think they're Covid hot spots. Staff don't take patients' medical complaints seriously either, I've seen diabetics denied insulin, I was put in isolation because I had a migraine and was "drug seeking" ibuprofen. There's usually no fresh air, because you're behind layers of doors. The conditions are always poor at best.

What about Board and Cares in San Diego? They require no PPE for staff or masks for their residents who pay rent in these locations. Yet, the residents are being told to stay on the grounds and not leave. But, the staff come and go and don't wear PPE for safety.
