I enjoy listening to grew up partly in St Ann also and like the rest of Jamaica our lives were made up with duppy stories when only radio as entertainment was the staple in a Jamaican household. My grandmother would walk me some of the way to school and I have to finish that dreadful journey alone the rest of the way....It was a thrill when Mass Sammy would take me on my grandfather's horse in those one morning after my granny took me over the first hill and I made my way down, there over in the tanzie bush stood a woman straight and in moving with a keg on her head and straight thick long hair to her waist just staring at me and I at her....Now growing up in those days you were taught to 'have manners' so good morning to her was a must....Not a word in response... she just stared and by the time I looked again the woman had It never left my mind to adulthood and I realized that must have been the spirit of an Arawak woman as it was common on my grandparents property and surrounding areas to find ornaments and utensils....To this day my aunt says the spirit of an Arawak woman is often seen roaming along the hallway! I have had other encounters but this one I share!

I do remember the story about the coffin and the John crows. And yes it was a big thing all over the island. I never knew the back end of the story. Thanks for all your reminders of the time I lived in Jamaica and growing up there.

CWJW, Hello, I never new anything about the coffin& the crow, , MY MOTHERS HALF BROTHER, he spent most of his life in USA, so he came back, and lived ar GRANDMA’S house in late70s
He told us some fantastic duppy stories, as this was late we fell asleep, then would reach over to get us up more stories, , I HAD never heard about ROLLONG CALF, until I went to PUBLIC SCHOOL IN BAMBOO, those boys talked about them all the time, but there is something I discovered when INUSA, SOME OF OUR FABLES, CAME FROM IRELAND, & a fer countries in AFRICA,
THE VERY same items, but if you never met these people, you would never know, , , , stay well God Bless you all, , , till next time ! 🇬🇧🇨🇦🇨🇦🇯🇲🇯🇲🇺🇸🇺🇸

I remember that "Drinks Trolley" so well. When I was about 9 or 10 years I remember Sniffing the various bottles to see what they be. Gin is the only one that smelt appealing, the bouquet ( I found out later) attributed to the Juniper Berries. Oddly, I don't recall the urge to even drink it. So when I was old enough to have a drink I chose GIN! ( That was temporary, though...I moved to scotch!) Great memories! The duppy stories too! 🙂

I heard of the coffin and John Crow story but never experienced it. I spent most of my summer holidays with my granny in St Elizabeth and that's where I heard some duppy stories

Good morning Miss Mel. I grew up in Riversdale, St. Catherine. That's in the country. My Aunt Rosa used to tell me stories about "de rollin calf." A frightening bovine creature complete with rattling chains and fire shooting out of its eyes. It would come in the dark of night and carry off naughty children. Used to scare me to death.😅I don't get to comment much, but I do so enjoy your stories. Please keep them comming.😋❤🤣🌹

I remember the John Crow and the coffin story. I was about 5 or 6 years old and living in Grants Bailey St. Ann when the story came out. I'm still traumatized by it because my lying cousin came home and tell us that it passed through her school that day and knocked down some of the children . SMH.🤣🤣
