I've been using the same case for 25 years. It's very modular in that all the front connectors are generic connectors you used to be able to buy at Radio Shack. So they are easily swappable by buying internal connection cables.

Case is also something you can absolutely buy second hand without a drop of loss in performance.

Just did a new build with an Antec 300 that's been standing in my basement for over a decade, and it looks pretty nice. Just replaced the old fans and it still feels like a quality case.

Whether you like the 5 1/2 slots in the front is up to you.

Case, motherboard, air or stock cooler instead of AIO, no fancy ram, less RGB, basic but reliable PSU.

Some people I know learnt how to solder to use old dell cases instead of buying a new case lol

Never cheap out on RGB. Great RGB means super fast performance especially for 4k gaming

just no need for case and put it in a fridge or freezer so that you don't need to buy a cooler. use a extra long hdmi or displayport cable to your room

Storage. You can always just expand later. You probably don't need a 2tb SSD straight away.

Cases can always be reused in future builds, so if you're planning on keeping it for a while, I'd say it's worth spending more as long as it's within reason. But AIOs are definitely not worth it because once they fail, the whole unit has to be chucked, whereas a fan replacement on an air cooler is relatively cheap.

when i built my first computer last year i spent my entire budget on my hardware. it was a fairly decent budget at 2k. but i didnt buy a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, a desk, chair, headphones, speakers, flair. i used second hand peripherals and played my games on my couch and tv that i used for my xbox. eventually over time i bought all those things mentioned and made myself a beautiful setup, but i prioritized the imporant parts and upgraded the easy things over time. best advice i was ever given going into my first build👍

People forget that old cases, if you find the right one, are just as good as new ones. I’ve always preferred the horizontal cases so that’s what I looked for a few years ago when I built my computer, I used an antec fusion case and surprisingly the case peripherals still work if you use LCD smarty and code your own driver for the volume knob (if anyone has an official driver for it please point me to it.) the case is great and provides a separated compartment for the psu, you might have to angle grinder out one of the supports to fit a big new gpu but i rigged a 2070 in mine and it’s been great for years. Horizontal desktops need to make a resurgence. A monitor stand and a computer? All you need right in front of you, plus it still looks sleek and modern with the aluminum front. Only thing is I paid $250 for mine and had a hard time justifying that purchase when I was 19. But I did it and have not regretted it

Honestly solid advice.. I cant tell you how many PC's ive built over the years that either have a 250$ case and then lower tier cpu/gpus or they will get cpu/gpu with no plans to run it past stock specs and then have a 200-300$ liquid cooler on there when it would have been sooo much better to put that towards a better cpu or gpu.. There are also a lot of solid cases for 100$ or under, and I totally understand wanting to have an aesthetically pleasing build but if you want it specifically for gaming are you going to be happier when playing if you have a nice looking case or if you're running modern games smoothly.

The other one I potentially would add is monitors.. I see so many people splurging for monitors that they either don't need the specs of or are just a bad deal. A big one is 4k monitors and its normally either getting like a 27" 60hz monitor for the same price as a 32" 144 hz 2k or spending like 500$ on a 32" 160hz 4k when again with either they are not going to be watching 4k content and either going to be bottlenecking their preformance and still playing at 1080/1440 or don't even have a stronf enough system to play at 1440 because of how much the monitor was.. I have seriously had to almost redo every list people have sent to me because of out or wack specs or paraphernalia.

The way I see it as far as planned upgrades, look for components that will be the most cost effective and performance effective to replace. Its a lot easier to add another 1tb of ssd space than it is to drop another 450 for a graphics card 1 tier above your current one..

You can profitably cheap out on any of them if your budget is limited. The only question is which ones you absolutely can't do without.

If your budget is limited then you need to focus. The more limited, the tighter the focus
