The best way to circumvent this frustrating situation you should instead say "i see you look upset about something. When you're ready to talk I'm here to listen when you need." It let's them know that someone is truely paying attention and that they are not alone with out feeling pressured to talk about what they are going through. Sometimes we are afraid of expressing ourselves because what we are going through may be something silly or they may feel like its silly and they don't want to be told it's silly. It helps them come to their own conclusion on what's going on.
