I have met a NFL quarterback, a MLB player, and George Steinbrenner only to be told AFTER the fact who they were and their "fame". Each got treated with courtesy and small talk conversation. The 2 sports players were friends with my boss. They got asked who was asking for him because I was his assistant administrator. I had no idea until the boss laughed at my ignorance of sports figures. Mr Steinbrenner and I rode from the 1st-floor elevator of 12 floors. I got off at 10 (our business occupied 10th and 11th. He occupied 12th). Had a lovely talk about the weather, and restaurants around the place and then thanked him for the conversation and wished each other a nice day. My co-workers were unusually quiet during the ride and asked me if I knew who I was talking with after we got off. It was before the internet was widely used and so I had to ask my mum, a sports nut who was this man. LOL

Live in West Palm Beach and this is common. I've seen many athletes, celebrities, artists, powerful financial leaders both current and former and at least half the time a friend has to tell me their name. Some people should not be expected to know the person depending on their age and interests. Additionally there are thousands of famous, powerful or influential people in the world. You can't expect someone to know all of them.

In Australia our celebrities usually don't get approached they can go around and not get bothered by fans. I've Spotted movie stars like Nicole Kidman, Russel Crowe & Hugh Jackman walking or swimming at local beaches in Sydney.
