This indie dev ported his game from Unity to Godot... and NAILED IT

Road to Vostok has quickly jumped to the top of my list of upcoming games I'm keeping an eye on... but it was all done by just one developer. And not only did he build the game in Unity, but he also just recently ported it to Godot, an open source game engine.

With hardcore survival elements, realistic gunplay, and a dev who has shown he's serious about the project, Road to Vostok looks to be the real deal.

As someone who likes to play DayZ solo but gets tired of griefers..this looks fantastic.

Yeah this demo feels really good from looting to exploring and even the AI was a little fun to mess around with! I really enjoyed the nighttime setting with the background music and it's just so immersive. I seriously cannot wait for the next demo with more areas to explore.

I am also very excited for the game, more so since it is set in Finland.
And yes it is 1 developer, but gun animations, some gun sounds, some 3d models are not made by him. He hires freelancers for things like that.

Surprised to see Vostok on here but very glad. He's been doing some crazy good work for a solo guy. Very keen to see where he ends up.

Feels strongly inspired by Arma, which 100% isn't a bad thing.

Honestly, any game with permadeath is brutal, frustrating, and a tough sell. And I love it.

Video games lack a lot of tension because there are usually no actual stakes, imaginary or otherwise. If you fail, you reset from your save point.

I understand that’s the accepted working model, it keeps things accessible, and it helps sales. It’s the way of the world and there ain’t no coming back (with apologies to T-Bird).

…but the prospect of permadeath for your character is unquestionably tense and thrilling. And your choices change.

A very small number of people remember Star Wars Galaxies (Intrepid server, whassup?!) and the proposed inclusion of Jedi. The devs said that Jedi would be rare (because that’s time-period accurate to the galaxy between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back), and that even if a player could unlock a Jedi, they would have to be very careful because beyond a certain point, the Jedi character would be bound by permadeath rules.

I was so excited by this prospect. The players with bounty hunter mains were excited. And I think the hardcore Jedi wannabes were excited.

Could you imagine grinding out the time required to unlock your Jedi, train them up, and then risk taking them out into the open world where one mistake could wipe away all those gains? You’d be damn careful, right?!

…alas, the devs relented and Jedi were not only numerous, they were respawnable.

At a certain point, you could walk through Mos Eisley allegedly at the height of Imperial rule, and there would be dozens of Jedi running around without a care in the world. Talk about a break in immersion. Such a let down.

All of this to say, permadeath isn’t the marketplace’s biggest selling point in video games. For me, though, it’s fan-freaking-tastic, and I’m glad this game is implementing it in a smart way.

Might end up buying this if not for the game itself, but the fact that I finally get to use RK- family rifle again. (Even if it isn't the og rk-62 that I used when in the army) :D

It's very sad that games that are made with heart and soul are usually always made by only one developer....
Still, the idea looks interesting, will see how it will be realized
