Lately I’ve been seeing this trend of pop/club songs mimicking the same lyrical and beat format as old songs that became famous enough to reach meme or cultural icon status. I’m not saying it’s bad or anything. I actually really like it. Basically a reference that covers the whole song while being its own thing with change in lyrics. And those of the newer generation who don’t know the older songs actually get introduced to them through these other versions. It’s like a musical generation call back.




Here are some that I’ve personally noticed over the years you guys might enjoy:

We Like to Party! by Vegaboys = Party Shaker by R.I.O.
Dragons tea Dinner Tei by O-Zone = My Life is a Party by ItaloBrothers
Blue (Da Ba Dee) by Eiffel 65 = I’m Good by David Guetta & Bebe Rexha

And like a gazillion more for Blue specifically for some weird reason so I won’t list those cause honestly with there being so many I can’t. Though I’ve also seen other more obscure examples where the song isn’t exactly a one on one match but rather has certain sections that reference an iconic part of an older song. Like both Dua Lipa’s songs Levitating and Love Again. Or Fall Out Boy’s Centuries referencing Giorgio Moroder’s Tom’s Diner. It’s honestly really fun to encounter a song that tickles that nostalgic feeling in the back of your mind, but it’s so long since you heard the original that you can’t remember why it sounds so familiar even though it’s on the tip of your tongue. And then bam! It hits you all at once. And you then love both songs all the more.
