What's like to be an atheist (during my entire life): our beliefs, views and the society

00:00 Intro
1:00 Q1: What do Chinese People believe in
We believe in common sense, science and we respect our ancestors and the nature, we believe who has created us. We believe in the things we can physical see and what we can make effort to: for example, we believe we get food because of work; if we want to live a better life, we will need to work harder; we will use medicine and medical treatment when getting sick.

3:02 Q2: Is not religious "free thinking"
Probably. We will think about the philosophical questions such as "who am I", "where am I from", "what is the purpose of life". It could be confusing but also very fun.
Life has no purpose initially, but we give it a purpose afterwards.

4:00 Q3: My thinking about being religious
I generally hold a positive idea about the religious. My first impression about religions is from the bible stories in my local bookstore (when I was in primary school).
Now I still think the system is beautiful. It makes so many sophisticated, abstract things explainable. And it brings peace and love into people's mind.
At the mean time, I will love you and respect you first, whether you're religious or not, or what you religion is, because you're the first physical existence I can see.

5:24 Q4: Afterlife and Ghosts
It can be scary that we do not have an afterlife. It is like someone just disappear after death.
We have ghost stories in East Asian countries and among atheist people.

6:33 Q5: Chinese government views
Religious are not banned in China; there are churches, temples where you can practice your religious belief in China. Religions also have internet presence in China and we have books about religions in Chinese book store. But at the same time, all the published material (physical or internet) are moderated.
The Chinese government are officially atheist. Religions are not banned, but also non-promoted and there will be some skepticism. Because it is believe that: religions can be of control mechanism. You may not hold public activities about religions and doing missionary work in China will be a bad idea.

Great video, I like how objective Chinese culture is. In my opinion, religion separates people, more than it brings together .

Great and fine video. The science has developed so much that nobody understands the whole area of reality. That is why we much believe science. If we had never searched and studied difficult questions and if we had been satisfied with religious answers we would still be living in caves.

I am an atheist and align myself with secularism. This is a view centered on human agency and a reliance on science and reason rather than revelation from a supernatural source to understand the world. I maintain that religion is not a precondition of morality, and object to excessive religious entanglement with education and the state.

I emphasize the individual and social potential, as well as the agency of human beings, which I consider the starting point for serious moral and philosophical inquiry.

My values are reinforced by advances in science and technology, giving me confidence in my exploration of the world. I focus on human well-being and advocate for human freedom, autonomy, and progress. I view humanity as responsible for the promotion and development of individuals, espouse the equal and inherent dignity of all human beings, and emphasize a concern for humans in relation to the world.

We are reasonable beings, and reasoning and the scientific method are means of finding truth. I argue that science and rationality have driven successful developments in various fields while the invocation of supernatural phenomena fails to coherently explain the world. One form of irrational thinking is adducing. I am skeptical of explanations of natural phenomena or diseases that rely on hidden agencies.

For people to be autonomous, their beliefs and actions must be the result of their own reasoning. For me, autonomy dignifies each individual; without autonomy, people's humanity is lessened. I also consider human essence to be universal, irrespective of race and social status, diminishing the importance of collective identities and signifying the importance of individuals.

When I first heard the atheist idea that our parents/ancestors created us, I thought for sure it was a joke. Tell me where do I find the plans; the design documentation for creating off spring? A design process that is more easily accomplished in a drunken stupor than in the light of cold reason.

要做好人为自己为别人 而不是为上帝 我觉得这才是更有意义的信念 但是不信教并不是自由精神 自由思考 because modern society (irrespective of religion) is still filled with tons of beliefs, standards, rules, traditions, and people will still be bound by these things even if they are not religious. I would also argue that religious people, on average, may be more likely to do good things, even if it is being held together by religion. It's impossible to measure but this is the impression I get. To be non-religious and be a good person can be hard, to find meaning in life on your own, but that is the kind of person I respect very much and I can't say I'm a truly good person. In an ideal world, we would all be non-religious and still care for one another, even if there is no logical or religious reason to.

Lucia you may want to becareful of the term atheist, I believe the official definition is not believing in god or any higher entity. Someone who is atheist is by definition non-religious, but someone who is non-religious is not necessarily atheist. For example, I am a non-religious person who is not sure if there is a god or not, but would like to believe that there is, the official term for this is: agnostic theist. This makes me more of spiritual, non-religious person. This is more about the technical definition, and isn't really the point of the video, just wanted to let you know.

There's no doubt the believing that there is more then yourself has a placebo effect. It gives you the sense that there is a overall purpose. But this is a form of self delusion. Knowingly lying to yourself to hide the fear of not knowing. Confucius: "Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance." Accepting reality for what it is, and not for what you want it to be. If you want reality to be, it requires more then just thought, it requires effort.

I think the most important thing is diversity of thought. The world would a awful boring place if we all believed the same.

I was raised as a Christian, but left at the age of fourteen, because of both philosophical, and scientific conflicts with what I was being taught.

So, I have seen both sides of the coin, and come to the conclusion that it is a more honest answer to say: I don't know.

K, listened to the entirety of your vid, well done, but I have a question. With that level of critical thought and the fact the non-religious are less romanced by social conformity, why does the populace stand for a, once again, nearly Maoist-style dictatorial government based on social conformity to the point of severely oppressing or censoring dissent? Is the herd-mentality of state-mandated belief that overpowering? It seems a state god is just replaced by state god complex.
