In this video, I explain the emission readiness monitors and how they work. This is for a vehicle that is having a hard time getting the emission readiness monitors to "complete" or switch to "ready". The drive cycle I talk about in the video applies to a 2005 Toyota Matrix and 2005 Pontiac Vibe. Here is the complete drive cycle.

Start by verifying there are no diagnostic trouble codes in the computer. Current, pending or history codes. Then verify the conditions prior to test drive.

• The barometric pressure is more than 75 kPa or 22 in Hg.
• The Engine Coolant Temperature is below 75°F.
• The battery voltage must be between 10.5-16 volts.
• The fuel level sender is between ¼ and ¾.

Apply the vehicle parking brake.

Idle the engine until the engine reaches an operating temperature of at least 70°C or 158°F and then Accelerate at part throttle to 45-55 mph. Maintain speed for 4 minutes or until the I/M System Status indicator updates to YES on your scan tool under live data. Then Decelerate to 0 mph. Then idle for 2 minutes while the following criteria is maintained:

• Service brake depressed
• Automatic transmission in drive or Manual transmission in neutral with the clutch pedal depressed

Then Accelerate at part throttle to 45-55 mph and maintain for 4 minutes or until the I/M System Status indicator updates to YES.

Emission Readiness Monitors or Drive cycles.

• Catalyst Monitor Drive Cycle
• Component Monitor Drive Cycle
• EGR System Monitor Drive Cycle
• EONV System Monitor Drive Cycle
• EVAP System Monitor Drive Cycle
• Fuel System Monitor Drive Cycle
• Heated Oxygen Sensor Monitor Drive Cycle
• HO2S Heater Monitor Drive Cycle
• Misfire Monitor Drive Cycle

Thanks for this! I've got an '05 Vibe that threw an evap code and I'm trying a few things to fix it so I can get my plates renewed. Big help with the condition specs!

EDIT: I followed the instructions as directed and everything switched to ready EXCEPT the EVAP/emissions---that ended up completing AFTER the engine cooled down overnight (checked it again the next evening and it was green), just FYI for anyone that runs into the same

I’m in NY and passed first time last year. I just paid the $37 whatever for a “failed” test. The emissions wasn’t ready for testing.
