This makes a lot of sense when I see my friends start working out initially losing weight and then all of a sudden the weight loss stops even though they continue to workout, sometimes even harder than before.

I can certainly see how the unused calories can damage the body. Amongst my friends and family that's exactly what's happening when you don't move enough.

I think the only way to meaningfully lose weight is through a combination of diet and exercise. Also the exercise routine needs to constantly change or the body begins to adapt.
