I loved After the Silence. Louise O'Neill was really able to nail the mystery element while capturing a wonderful sense of atmosphere on the island, and focusing on some really important topics as well. Also, I don't know if I've said it before but I absolutely adore that dress on you - the colours are so gorgeous!

it might be very capitalist of me but I love a book haul. there's something oddly satisfying about seeing a bunch of exciting new books, even if they're not mine

I was literally telling myself just now “Hm, if only Jen released a video tonight, that would be so great. But it’s only been like 2 or 3 days since the last one”. You can therefore imagine my face when I saw the notification 😂 and it’s haul as well, what a treat!

The River Within won a Northern Writers’ Award before it was published and it’s brilliant! I’m also desperate to read The Harpy

The Forward Prize is also my fave in the UK. Always fascinating to see what makes their book each year.

I’m waiting for my copy of The Harpy to be shipped from London. I preordered it in the spring, when it was originally scheduled for a June release. Very much looking forward to it as I loved The End We Start From.

Just finished Outsiders and (mostly) LOVED it. I'm astonished at how well the short stories were edited together. I definitely want to add the 3 of Cups anthologies to my collection as well as some of works from the authors in the anthology, including the Come Let Us Sing Anyway by Leone Ross (it sounds so tantalizing!). The only quibble I had with Outsiders was To Peel an Orange, which is funny because it is the one closest to my personal experiences, and I definitely resonated with the kind of outsidership it was trying to portray. But I found the way it handles the Hong Kong protests concerning? I have friends from HK, one of whom is very close to me, so I've listened to a lot of grief concerning what is happening there. And I understand that the dismissive glossing of it was to support that distantness the main character has with the troubles of the people there as an other, but it didn't sit well with me that something that has resulted in stripping the freedoms, the rights, and the mass police brutality of the people there being used as a thin device, especially as that may be many people's only experience of hearing about the protests. Part of me wants to excuse it because it was still beautifully written and it really captured a perspective I feel like there's an utter lack of in published writing, but part of me is just...so frustrated that it used that subject matter in that way.
