I spent 4 weeks in Iceland back in 2009. I was 24. It was my "coming of age" travel experience. I've met amazing People and seen jaw-dropping landscapes. So many intense experiences.
-
I remember eating smoked salmon and toast on the summit of Eldfell on Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar. The sky was pure blue, the grass was the greenest I've ever seen, and the volcanic cone I sat on top of was a deep red ocre with smelly smoke coming out here and there along the slopes.

I remember walking along the sides of a glacier valley at Þórsmörk, stepping on the wrong stone, losing my footing and almost falling down a 50 foot drop. When I got back to basecamp, the porkchops I had were the best I'd ever tasted.

I remember the infinite amount of flies at Mývatn. A French couple were having a hard time communicating with the hotel clerk and I translated for them.

I remember spending a night surrounded by sheep on Flatey, and their beautiful chapel with the painted murals inside.

I remember Seyðisfjörður, one night in a hostel chatting with a Scottish tourist, and then boarding a Smýril ship to Færeyjar, where I spent 2 weeks. And then Seyðisfjörður again as I came back for my last week in Iceland.

I remember hitchhiking. I was picked up by two Polish tourists, Bart and Marius, who took me around Snæfellsnes and on to Stykkisholmur in exchange for gas money. I was picked up by a farmer who hated how corn fields were being used for making fuel instead of feeding people. I was not picked up for a while and I was walking in the wind and rain and feeling the best I had ever felt for years. I was picked up by a Coca-Cola truck driver who took time to show me around, to slow down and let me take pictures. I forgot my hat in his truck and he called at me.

I remember the lunar landscapes of Hveravellir, in the desolate and hautingly beautiful center of Iceland, a vastness of small stones and short flowering bushes with mighty glaciers in the distance.

Yes, it’s very true Iceland even though I haven’t been yet looks breathtakingly beautiful. Usually, I’d smile and have a happy feeling watching this video but today I can’t stop crying. I lost my father almost two years ago next month and we planned to visit Iceland in the mere future. I’m thinking to pay homage to my father, I should visit Iceland for the both of us. We lived in Iceland for 2 years on the military base. We could see the steam from the Blue Lagoon from our building.
