Don’t Blindly Buy REITs. Buy REIT Stocks Only If...

Today we’re going to use REITs as a teachable moment to simplify stock market investing and I believe now is the perfect time for this lesson because of all the chaos going on in the market.

REIT stands for Real Estate Investment Trust and what makes REITS so attractive are that by law they have to return a minimum of 90% of their taxable income to shareholders as dividends each year.

The REITs do this to avoid taxes which is why REITS can be the perfect investment vehicle for tax advantaged accounts like ROTH IRAs.

So, how do we pick the right train or in this case REIT? Our first step is to use the Beast Mode Spreadsheet to see how it has performed in the past.

Outstanding analysis as always! I was surprised to see a new batch of REITs that weren't featured in your previous REIT video (as far as I remember), no IIPR or any of the others that I remember. However, I can use the same thought process to revisit those REITs as well. Having your previous Beast Mode spreadsheets on tap is very nice as a Patron. I'm a little cagey right now since both the S/P and the Nasdaq broke their 50 day SMAs this week along with a head and shoulders pattern, , should be an interesting trading day on Monday!

GMRE and HASI are my largest REIT holdings. O is doing ok for me and FRT was my only holding in the green on a red trading day. I like having REITs in my portfolio. Hope to check out South America in the future!

Hi Jerry I am the one that talked on your last video about my REITS in my vanguard fund, which didnt move up yet to where it was in Jan. Pre COVID. Any insight on Vanguard? Should I transfer my ROTH TO another fund like fidelity so I can have that diversity you mention in REITS? THEY ALSO WONT LET ME USE INVERSE QQQ s either.
