My Philosophy: I love music. I love all kinds of music. And I go into every album wanting to love it, so that’s my starting point for every review. Keep in mind, though, that music is a very personal thing. An album may hit me personally in a very different way than it hits you. That’s complexly natural and unavoidable, which is why I try to include some personal context in my reviews. It’s so you’ll have a better idea where I’m coming from. In the end, it’s still just my personal opinion, which is inherently biased, and which you may or may not agree with. Hopefully, once in a while, we’ll find common ground.

Great review! Exile In Guyville is my favorite album of all time and this boxset has been one of the coolest re-releases I've seen in a while (I ordered the vinyl version but I might pick up the CD at one point or another). Your opinion on Girly Sound is especially interesting, as a lot of the Phair fans I've met have praised them, almost entirely without flaw (and I will admit to being one of those people as well) but you gave me some much appreciated insight on them!

THE EARLY TAPES ARE MORE REMARKABLE THAN THE ENTIRETY OF BEATLES DISCOGRAPHY!!!

I got the vinyl set and it's very well produced in my opinion; the music itself also sounds as good as ever. She signed a short-lived deal with ATO around 2008 and her only release on that label was a 15th Anniversary reissue on vinyl & CD (the 15th Anniversary included three B-side bonus tracks & I suspect their missing from the 25th set because ATO still has the rights). The 15th Anniversary set suffered from an interior mix and this new version is definitive for me. If I were to criticize one aspect of the release, I would have preferred for "Exile" to have been housed in a gatefold as opposed to a single outer sleeve.

As for the music, I agree with every word of this review and I’m a fan since Whip-Smart. Although I would say you would’ve been a lot happier with the packaging if you’d got the vinyl box. It’s loaded with photos and ephemera. You just got the wrong format!! P.S. Kudos to you for calling the Girly-Sound tapes “albums” and not demos. Very few people get that right.
