has anyone ever noticed that the ethics of the federation in star trek are generally consequentialist? if you do something and it goes wrong, you are entirely on the hook for it no matter what your intentions were.

Yeah, that's always bugged me too. I guess one could say that he or she wouldn't want to live in a society that kills people for their organs and that it's not just how many people but personal freedom and all too. Morality is tough.
