On top of this, they heavily contributed to the Ike & Tina Turner Revue’s success. Despite being known for playing second fiddle, it is until when they ran solo as a girl group that they realized their full potential. Their song, “I’m blue” released in 1961, became a national hit reaching No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on the R&B chart. Their mentors played a hug role in this hit. The song writer was Ike Turner while Tina helped arrange the vocals.

I remember seeing Jessie Smith in 1962 when she was featured as “Little Miss Jessie” with Benny Sharp’s band in St.Louis just before she became an Ikette. She was a dynamic performer who could really belt it out!
