I think it's quite cute to keep adding support to old archetypes. ofc it's not ideal if that support is overpwered or unfun, but then that holds true for literally every new card, so hey.

MBT in a video about the Digimon TCG made a point about how the mascot-level monsters had not necessarily the best decks but consistently meta relevant ones.

While I like Yugioh's diversity of decks. I feel like there is a good argument to make some of the more famous ones consistenly relevant without going to such extremes. How much does it hurt if Dark Magician's were consistently as relevant as HERO's were during TOSS?

There is also the fact that they've launched the movie pack before the movie itself that year, so the deck would have the alternative white dragon avaliable

My hot take: people see this negatively, but I do think Konami should push these older archetypes hard. Like maybe not Ishizu level crazy though maybe thats also fault of the tear archetype. But I dont like how Konami at times does a sorta half hearted legacy support to some archetypes which ends up not helping that mich.

Was Spirit Dragon pushed to hell. Yeah. But it also wasnt oppresively so. We need this sorta level of support for these ancient archetypes.

I wonder how much money Kaibacorp paid Konami to get them to print Spirit Dragon in 2016

Honestly there's so many blue eyes cards I think they can go without adding any more for a while

I like the fact that they keep adding support to old archetypes, it’s one of my favourite things about yugioh when you can have a favourite card and even if it’s from 20 years ago you can still play it with friends (summoned skull excepted for some reason???). It’s always partially going to be motivated as marketing, but why not, they’ve made so many iconic characters and monsters

I mean you can say the same about everything, while not Iconic, the Ishizu cards and the Tear 0 format can be seen as a publicity stunt to promote their newest box and give some of the fans of the community a "HEY THAT'S LIKE THE CARD IN THE SHOW BUT BETTER" moment

A publicity stunt that also double as promotional material for the anniversary movie. It was one of the most boring worlds finals. I'll never forget that mirror match where both players bricked.

It’s funny cause there is no wh this could ever happen for any arc type again. You’d have make some insane level support for BEWD to ever come close to tournament level these days

You also forgot about the 2015 buff to the field spell

I actually think that was terrible on Konami's part. The support was good heck it's still used to this day cause blue eyes don't have many negates and it takes advantage of blue eyes decks always summoning one at a time, HOWEVER a banlist is meant to balance the game and put it to a level where certain decks can compete and while that hasn't always happened it's at least done with those thoughts and intentions in mind. In this case though the banlist existed only to essentially rig a tournament just so that one specific deck could win. That was just flat out unfair on Konami's part you might as well say that it wasn't an actual tournament and was just a publicity stunt for blue eyes

Konami printing cards to shape the meta needlessly?

not my Konami

Well, on the one hand, I like rank 8 strategies, but at the same time I don't want blue eyes players to be happy.

It's a conundrum.

Worlds 2016 was the absolute highlight of Yugioh history and you can’t change my mind

I mean, given the bricking capability I doubt they could’ve planned for blue-eyes to win, and I think releasing promotional cards that are competitive is a really cool way to bring the two sides of the community together, lots of games (like Pokémon) have people who like the gameplay and people who like the characters/shows as completely separate groups of people
