For those not in the United Kingdom, this performance was 2 weeks after the 2017 bombing at the conclusion of an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester (the Gallagher's home city) -- killing 22 and injuring more than 1000 . Within 3 days, it had, organically, become an anthem of unity and healing for victims, greater Manchester, the UK, and all those touched by the tragedy.
I'm quite sure this was Gallagher's first public performance of the song following the bombing; a few days earlier (4 June 2017), Chris Martin of Coldplay sang it as a duet with Grande at the One Love Manchester benefit concert which Noel didn't attend (Liam did, instead).

The audience overtaking vocal duties of the song wasn't their tribute to HIM -- Gallagher deferring the vocals to the audience was his tribute to THEM, his home city, and a nation that still needed healing.

I got to see him perform it a month ago in Phoenix, Arizona, USA -- loved every second of it.
