This movie has the best air raid scenes of any war film. They were bone chilling!

I'm glad that this movie is being made. This was a conflict in WWII that gets little attention.

The Japanese were brutal and committed atrocities in China, but there were also Japanese who opposed the invasion, they even tried to assassinate Tojo to stop the war .
Sadly even this history is rarely taught in Japan...

Before I went to watch this movie, I thought it might be another attempt by another Chinese director to win western market. I thought it might be another hero, a weird martial arts movie that surprisingly pleased western market but not me, a Chinese who grew up with martial arts culture.

How wrong I was, this movie was all about Chinese: government corruption, Chinese fighting Chinese, and bureaucratism, the movie showed them all, and more importantly, real. This movie does not only have the stunning visuals all the big budget Hollywood movies have, but it also has an amazing way of telling history. The movie showed the how cruel a war could be, by telling story of a rich family in Henan province at 1942, when there were a drought and a war threatening. The overall tone was serious, but you will be laughing at some little humors now and then.

I would definitely suggest this movie to anyone who is interested in Chinese culture. For it displayed a real china, unpleasant, even sad, but its real.

This is part of a larger story that needs to be told in the West widely and well....

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. I don't know & I don't care. But I do know that this was one hell of a movie. With the exception of vintage 1970's Kung Fu flicks & Akira Kurosawa films, I'm not much into Asian movies, nor am particularly I fond of subtitles. But this movie was surprisingly good, that excellent. It was very sad & emotional. In many ways it is like "The Good Earth" (1932), starring Paul Muni & Luise Rainer (who is now 103 years old! (God bless her!)

OK...so obviously you haven't seen the movie, or maybe you did, but you didn't understand it? (or you wouldn't be calling it "propaganda") It's basically about a famine & war in 1942 (NOT 1959) & 1 family's struggle to survive. The movie was very deep, powerful & sad. Great acting & cinematography, etc, but nothing about the movie suggests it's "propaganda". Not EVERY historical movie that comes out of China is "propaganda". Why don't you watch the film? (or watch it AGAIN & pay attention?)

I myself had actually communist minded education in Japan. like Japan was the bad guy, aggressor, and cherished Us-made peaceful constitution. but now I can see the positive side of Japanese war history. Japan is the only non-Western nation to fight the world wars. If Japan didn't fight, probably still many parts of the world remained as Western colonies include Japan. you will see what Japan can do to the world in future.

I think it's important to note that the long history of China might be a small factor in why someone would be patriotic or proud to be "chinese" regardless of who the government was, be it an out-dated imperial dynast, the CCP, or the KMT - if progress was made to improve the lives of many, I don't see how they shouldn't be proud. So my point then, is that a film-maker that makes a "patriotic" film in China can do so out of his own free will, and not necessarily coercion or brainwashing.

It's because Chinese do not enjoy the same amount of rights as we do in Taiwan and Japan. It's fascinating how Chinese would think so differently from other nationalities; I think their government has done a terrific job restricting freedom speech and thought.

One famous American director or critic had said that a good war movie must be anti-war. It is not just putting a good nazi/japanese soldier there that can make it a good movie. Actually I have a japanese friend. He always like to watch japanese war movies. I've seen lots of them but to tell the truth, nearly all of Japanese war movies about WW2 complains their sufferings from their war with the US. It is like they portray themselves as the victims of WW2. Why? What about the Asians invaded?

Japan did not liberate Asia, they were just new Imperialists, the Japanese who respected China were kicked out of power. It was a great tragedy that Hideki Tojo.

What you said is true. This is a movie to help Chinese people think deep why there were so many painful memories in history, and why Communist Party won the war to general Chang kai shek with the help of Chinese peasants. Although an invasion and war make the drought worse, the film filled people with heaviness of human rights instead of hatred of another invading race.
Just can't believe people can link this to propaganda.
