The UK pays just under £12 billion per year in membership fees to the EU. The UK is what is known as a 'net contributor' to the EU budget, meaning that it gets back less than it puts in. This is for two reasons:

42% of the EU's 120 billion Euro budget is devoted to the 'cohesion policy' an economic program designed to help the EU's poorer members get up to the same level as the richer ones. In fact, in 2014 the UK was obliged to pay an extra £1.7bn for the EU budget because its economy had performed beyond expectations.The other large slice goes to agricultural subsidies (35%). The UK has a relatively small farming sector, and therefore receives less in return.

EU counties on their own aren't strong, but together EU as one country is bigger, richer and all in all better than any other country in the world. If US were just individual states as their own country they wouldn't have achieved nowhere nearly as much as the US today.

I truly do not understand why to vote to leave the UK. I am a law student and hence I know in detail all the law issues. Since, 1974 how bad have things been in the UK, not that bad!. He should be advocating for harsher immigration policies and maybe some legal powers to be transferred to the Westminster parliament. He should not in any way vote to leave. The reason he is doing so, is self interest. If the leave the EU wins the referendum, Osborne will stand no chance against him. It is a pity that others do nt understand this.
