In this video I'll show you how a simple settings tweak can increase the saturation levels on your Retroid Pocket 2+, 3, or 3+ device by up to 200%, giving the display a near-OLED level of vibrancy.

Keep in mind that you lose a lot of color depth when you increase saturation

Thanks for the helpful comparisons. I know color preference can be subjective but for me even the 1.6 just throws off too many of the intended visuals due to losing some depth. Many of the browns looked more reddish like the ground and trees in Sonic Mania. Skintones are off with mario and Ryu in mvc1 looks like he has a tan. It was even more noticeable on that comparison with the 505 on the daijishou snes screen at 6:45. On the 3+ at 1.6, marios face looks more yellowish, and the rainbow track behind them lost detail. And on the left side of the screen, there's much less detail to the point that only Dixie Kong is fully visible lol.

The thing about OLED that makes the difference is the excellent levels of contrast, and thats not something a saturation increase can replicate. The colors with this tweak might appeal to someone if they just want a vivid look, but the tradeoff is less accuracy and often less detail.

After trying it for 5 minutes on 1, 7 - 1-6 and 1, 2, i returned to default settings. Even though the saturation on the grey and blue colors look relatively more vibrant, all the reds and oranges loose all the details, which is a bummer. RP3+'s screen is already a well saturated screen, but everyone has their own taste.

I love the tweak, and it really does look great on Genesis and GBA. I do find 1.6 to be a bit oversaturated for me - I've been setting it at 1.4 and looks fantastic

You have so many specific videos, is great, without considering anything like views you make them thru and easy to follow just because we will need them. You're amazing man

OLED is all about the perfect black kevels not (fake) saturation.

When you said the Sega Genesis looks "really vibrant, " what I expected to hear was "like retro vomit." The platforms literally just explode out of the black background. There seems to only be 3 colors on the screen: bright orange, bright purple, and bright green. All other colors disappear.

This is a valid fix for consoles with cooler screens, I think, but 60% is way too much. I'd probably cap it at 20-30%.

Did it yesterday on my RP3, loving it on the 1.3 saturation setup

Umm... Seems like Retroid chose a good default setting to me. If I had one of their devices, I'd go with 1.1 or 1.2 max, judging from your footage. You're losing so much detail when all the reds just bleed into any other reddish tone. That Super Nintendo title screen @ 5:11 shows his raised arm with a nice gradient giving a 3D effect, just like the face. At 5:15 (the one you say looks like the 1.6 setting on the device's display), that arm's just a red blob with a little bit of highlight at the right edge. It's even worse when comparing the two timestamps on Mario's hat. It simply goes from a "real hat" to a "flat sticker of a hat".

Read about it, yesterday and boom... Russ already made a video!
Tried 1.6 and 1.3 but everything red turns to orange so i defaulted back to 1.0. But thanks for the video.

The effect is nice but is more like "oversaturated filter" than "like Oled".

Looks a bit over the top for me at 1.6 but it's nice to have the option! Might try it out at 1.2 or 1.33.

Cheers and have a happy new year mate!

Call me crazy, but I actually used this method to DECREASE the saturation on my RP3+. I knocked it down to 0.8 and that feels right in line with how my games looked on CRTs growing up. Either way, thanks for this vid, I'm really happy with the results. It's fun and surprising to see how much people's preferred settings can vary

If you wanna do this have at it but I feel this saturation looks really bad. To say this looks OLED like is to completely be blind to colour depth and misses the point of OLED screens entirely.

I feel like a 1.2 or 1.4 would look better because that 1.6 is WAY too overly saturated. On the game selection screen, Mario's skin was practically yellow. The default or a slightly higher saturation would probably do the trick

Interesting. The color "pop" is fun, but if anything, the RP3+ already seemed overly saturated and inaccurate. Love the content Russ - if you know any calibrators in Hawaii with appropriate equipment, could be interesting to see how "accurate" some of these handheld displays really are.

Oled dominance is in its black levels and contrast but yeah you can try to match the colors.

Protip : this is subjective. You may like the already saturated screen of the rp3 or maybe you want it more saturated. Again, it is entirely subjective what looks "best" to you.

I finally got my retroid pocket 3+ a couple days ago and I'm enjoying it. I'm not sure I'll do this, but it is a cool that you can do this.
