The part where Eric hits the gong is from the British game show "Take Your Pick". At the start, they would question potential contestants for 60 seconds. The contestant could not answer Yes or No to any question. If so, the assistant to the compere would hit a gong. Anyone who got through the time limit (30-60 seconds, can't remember which) moved on to the next round.
