24 Hours In A City with NO LAWS: Meet The Locals
I took a couple of my kids to spend the night in The Last Lawless City in America: Slab City. I really wasn't sure if it was a good idea. Would we be safe? Where would we stay? What would the locals be like? Is it truly lawless? I wanted to meet the locals and hear their stories.

Slab City is in the Southern California desert near the Salton Sea. In 1942 Camp Dunlap was commissioned. It was decommissioned after WW II, and vets, squatters, homeless, and others in search of freedom - or hiding from the law - started moving in.

At the entrance is Salvation Mountain, a huge art project created by Leonard Knight celebrating God's love. We started at Salvation Mountain and spoke with Ron, who helps care for it.

We met several locals and they all turned out to be extremely welcoming and willing to share their stories. I'm grateful to all of them for taking the time for us.

Ken, Wrangler's Roost Cafe/Community Center
John, Rising Phoenix Art Gallery
Doc Spence, Acupuncture, Sex Therapist, Inventor
Merit, Handlebar Community Center, located at the skate park
Merit's friend, Twotens (sp) rents electric bikes at the skate park
Peter, Proprietor of Rainbow Camp, Creator of mini Salvation Mountains

"The path to ones own enlightenment begins thru forgiveness...so who can I forgive today.". This may be the most beautiful thing I've heard in quite some time. Thank you for that, Doc.

I visited slab city before the pandemic, and it left me feeling oddly comforted that if anything ever went sideways, even at this point in my life, I could come here and life wouldn’t really be so bad after all.

" Insecurity is the illusion it's only happening to you."
That is one of the wisest things I've heard in my life time.

My kids mom took the kids on a trip to California with a girlfriend of hers. The kids were in their early teens. I thought they were going to the beach, maybe Disneyland or something. They went to slab city. The only place they went. They were there for a good few days. The kids loved it.

Wish there was more places like this for people that don't have a lot of money. Unfortunately the county, state and federal government takes all the land and then calls it public.

Slab City is the PERFECT place to live. People can literally do whatever they want despite not having any laws. I'd rather live there than obey the demands of society

It's always great to see my old friend Mopar there in East Jesus. I once made him a sign, written in his own witty words which he took to Palm Springs to humor passers by enough to draw a donation. He's always been such a kind and wise man and so much fun to talk to while sitting around the fire in the slabs...

Well done video. These people at Slabcity are just unique individuals who are trying to survive somewhere that they are freer to be themselves, and do as they please. There's danger, and crime everywhere that you go to anymore. Not everyone can do what they're doing living. AND if people everywhere actually knew how many dead bodies are in the water across our world that no one's aware of, we wouldn't be wanting to step foot or get into the water everywhere we go to. Nice to see a family trying to understand the people at Slabcity, rather then being discourteous of them.

Slab city is definitely a unique area. On the other side of the canal, on the Chocolate Mountains side, there is a Navy SEAL training facility not too far as your heading toward the Glamis dunes from Slab City. Lots of interesting things to see in the vicinity of SC and the people are pretty neat, for the most part.
