Sorry this has caused so much aggravation for you all

But if your trusted dealer had told you the truth I would not have posted it . still we are getting aversive statements and nothing in writing what does that tell you . Bmw Germany are controlling the narrative.

Bit like my disappearing post !!!!!!! Yes control basically

This charger came out three months ago and was recommended by my BMW dealer. We are now being told this charger is not to be used on a BMW 1300 GS on the din please watch video for further information

I bought the Optimate quad 4 with can bus specifically for the 1300 GS, I’ve ben using for the last 6 weeks connected through the Din socket & everything is fine. I’ve had a direct email from Optimate UK. They say it’s not the charger, but think if you have a tracker or alarm this may be the cause of the drain. Also if you have been using with no issues continue to do so, the problematic ones have been going flat after a couple of days. Hope that helps Karl 😊

The reason why the OptiMate 4 Quad Program was struggling to maintain the battery in the R1300GS was due to a significant load being imposed on the battery when the socket was live. This issue appears to have solved with updates to the motorcycle's software. The most recent testing on the electrical system shows that the motorcycle has a load of just under 350mA when the socket is live. Although 350mA is quite high, it is still below where the OptiMate 4 Quad Program would struggle keep up.

The charger's software was also updated in order to counter the load on the pre-updated motorcycle's. It wasn't known how long BMW would take to fix the load issue on the bike, so action had to be taken to ensure that the charger could deal with it! Any one who is still having problems with the charger not being able to support the battery means that their motorcycle hasn't received the latest updates, and that they have one of the small number of chargers that hadn't received the programming update.

About the advice from BMW about only using their charger. Like all vehicle manufacturer's they are only every going to recommend that you use their own product. It has nothing to do with the product being incompatible with their motorcycle, or even causing warranty issues. It is purely so they sell their chargers over some other manufacturer's product.

The forums have been full of a lot of information about the new 1300GS and it’s not all been correct. There has been a software error on the 1300GS that appears to be the same as when the 1250GS was released. When charging via the accessory socket, the bike creates a large drain by switching on many systems. On the 1250GS, BMW did a software update that resolved the issues. So far, this has not been affecting all 1300GS bikes when charging via the socket and could be linked to alarms/trackers. If you do have an issue charging via the socket then until the bike has been updated you should charge directly to the battery. Not the end of the world as a temporary solution. 😊

The Optimate Quad 4 is not recommended by BMW. If UK dealers are saying to use it, then they are incorrect, I think.
The only charger recommended is the BMW battery charger plus, This is about the same price, much simpler to use and works perfectly. It also gives out the exact voltage read out and does all BMW bikes and battery types from very old to the new Lithium in the 1300.

Hi Nick et al, I have the Wunderlich badged Optimate4 quad program charger, I very quickly found that charging the bike through the DIN socket via the CAN BUS didn't keep the battery charged, if fact it started to flattern to battery. I have since only ever connected the charger directly to the battery terminals, this seems to manage to keep that battery charged up.

Can you explain why we can’t use it please?
I have just bought one !!! It seems to be working fine

I’m using the Quad 4 with no issue at all. Perfect piece of hardware

I just bought a charger exactly like this, for the new motorcycle I ordered, do you recommend from your experience to charge directly from the battery through the provided adapter or not at all?
Or ask for a replacement of a standard acid battery and not lithium?

WTF, I just bought this based on the information given that it works with the Canbus and is designed for Lithium batteries. Now we can’t use it? I previously bought a Ctek power sports charger for Lithium batteries that connects directly to the battery and was told that you can’t connect directly to the battery on this bike. I now have $200 worth of useless chargers. Will it work if I put a BMW sticker on it?

What about the BMW advanced battery charging system? Dealer recommended I get it.

Is it not the previous non Wunderlich version that you are referring to.
I bought one and it totally drained the battery connected via the 12v socket. I contacted NN and they immediately sent me the Wunderlich version, which works perfectly. I am confused……,

I have just bought this charger in advance of my bike landing. Spoken with the main dealer who endorsed these chargers and have been told that the 1300GS has a more complex CanBus system and it’s causing the bike to have electrical gremlins! I guess they have to blame the electrical issues on something lol. I’m now considering returning my OptiMate for a full refund and will purchase the OEM charger if necessary ⚡️🏍️🏁

Hi

Can you explain why, bought this to plug into dim socket as was advised, never had any problems with it

I was told that the only charger suitable for the R 1300GS is the BMW one.

I’m confused. I bought this Wunderlich/ Optimate charger specifically for the R1300GS as recommended and because you can’t get a hold of a BMW charger. It drained my battery and it took me a week to rectify the problem. Do you know why it’s no longer compatible as it’s been promoted as such?

Who really cares? Lol, it’s lithium…you shouldn’t need to charge it unless you leave it for like 6+ months. Everyone in such a tizzy…
