Colorado wildfire destroying hundreds of buildings, homes

Wind-fueled wildfires caused evacuations in Superior and Louisville, Colorado, Thursday (12/30). The Boulder County sheriff said hundreds of structures have burned. (CBS News/KCNC)

(Update: as of 12/31/21 number of hosues destroyed has grown to 1, 000+ Still no reported casualties.) For anyone confused, they only showed one building of a much MUCH bigger fire called the Marshal Fire. This fire was on an unstoppable rampage through metro Colorado. Over 1000+ homes destroyed. Entire neighborhoods have been leveled to the ground. Couldn't bring in any form of air support due to the 70 to 110 mph winds and extremely low visibility. Most destructive fire ever in Colorado. Luckily now it is snowing, putting out the remainder of the fire. No deaths are yet reported, it is possible it wont stay that way. This fire started when a wind gust upwards of 110 ripped a powerline out of the ground and it landed in the brush, igniting it. Considering we haven't had any significant moisture since summer it spread uncontrollably quick. The cause of the fire is unknown, but at the time of writing the news said that it was caused by downed power lines.

Native Americans have old stories about the Chinook winds that have always occurred in this area. You would think that the urban planners and power companies would have put power lines under ground....this was inevitable

From Australia - we are well familiar with the orange sky. Seems bizarre for mid winter - then again one of our worst years -began during winter. Run hide- people can't be replaced.

in the last few scenes, it almost seems like it's another planet. I feel awful for everyone who has had their homes and lives destroyed due to the fire.

I've live about 35 miles southwest of Salt Lake City and we just got 3" of fresh snow with more expected all day tomorrow and Sat morning. I'm hoping it gets across the Rockies fast and starts to extinguish the fires asap! It's mind boggling that we're watching this happen at a time when there should have been more than enough snow on the ground to stop this from happening.😢
