Ofunato Japan Tsunami 2011 * 13th Anniversary Video

In this episode, we will visit the south of Iwate Prefecture, which is characterized by a completely different bathymetry of the coastal waters and a different coastal character. Together with the northern part of Miyagi Prefecture, this is an area characterized by deep, funnel-shaped bays and fjord-like features, which have had a major impact on the very different manifestations of tsunami waves. In this area, there are towns such as Otsuchi, Rikuzentakata, or Kamaishi, which are famous for their almost destruction in 2011 and which we have covered in our videos in the past.
In this video, we will focus on the town of Ofunato and its surroundings, where we can very well demonstrate the devastating effects of the tsunami, in the form of sudden rises in the water level, which is so typical for this area.

The video has an exclusively educational character, it does not aim to shock or show purposefully explicit footage of destruction.

Another superb video on this awesome geological force of nature. The carefully edited video from 2011 combines perfectly with current video and satellite data. This achieves the chronological perspective that allows the viewer to fully understand the way in which shoreline geography shaped the 2011 tsunami into one of the most destructive in recorded history. This also allows the viewer to clearly understand how the great engineering minds of today have created an impressive strategy to mitigate these events in the future. As always, my sincere compliments.

Great visual. You can see the bay was basically a funnel surrounded by mountains and the oncoming water ended up having nowhere to go but up. It seems like a lot of the Japanese coast is like this.

A tsunami is deadly catastrophic because it has an enormous WAVELENGTH. In fact, absolutely EVERYTHING seen in this and every other tsunami video ever recorded on video in history, is a BYPRODUCT of the WAVELENGTH. Much, MUCH Larger waves (by height), can be seen at places like Nazare' Portugal. They can reach 80-100 ft. and cause absolutely no damage whatsoever, and surfers even ride them! But those 80-100 waves have a length about 200-250 meters, not several MILES. Thats why a tsunami looks more like a raging flooded river than a breaking wave.

9:53 sucks that the breakwaters hide the view of the harbor from the city. So much for those lovely coastal views….
