The anime series higurashi though is very character driven look at each character’s trauma and how their environment influences it. If you watch the old series, you can better appreciate how effed up the new antagonists are and how it all plays out differently in a way that is in a way an ultimate ending for most characters. Also about how friends can grow apart or have different goals

In all seriousness I think When they cry is a solid entry to more horror/psychological themed anime, I don't think it's the most disturbing or deepest you'd watch, but it still nails it with a unpredictable atmosphere that can change from cute and wholesome to straight up gory and despair inducing
