We don’t have a teacher shortage, we have a shortage of people who respect treachers

I’m a teacher who quit to homeschool my kids. There are a million factors in this, but one of my biggest reasons was I wasn’t allowed to “teach” because it was so test focused and had no support from admin. The day I decided I was done was when a student threw a chair at me, and admin decided the best punishment was to let him color and give him a sucker. That same week I got in trouble for allowing my kids extra time at recess because heaven forbid 5 year olds move their bodies. The system is broken.

And the respect from admin, students, AND parents.

The way we treat our teachers shows how much we care about our country’s future

We have an ADMINISTRATION ABUNDANCE, not a teacher shortage. As a retired teacher, I'd go back.

Dang I was a custodian at schools, I ended up bringing a lot of my own cleaning supplies! It was totally against the rules, but they didn't provide me with everything I needed! So I ended up having to sneak clean! 🤷‍♀️ Wth? Give people supplies to do their dang job!

This is true of many “helping” professions. We’re supposed to do this because it’s a “calling” well call me surprised when you can’t pay your bills or enjoy life with a “calling.”

Amen, my niece has a college degree and while in her first teaching job she was assaulted by a student. The administration did absolutely nothing to the student, no consequences at all. My niece is now a stay at home mom with no interest of returning to a career she wanted her entire life. School administrators have got to start sticking up for the teachers in their classrooms.

Wow this is so true. Former ESL teacher here myself. Think she forgot to mention the whole “being a punching bag for the culture war” thing too

Coming from a teacher, this women is speaking the absolute 100% truth. We need tons of support, an adaquate income and the respect of both parents and administration.

Children are the future. Teachers often spend more time with our future than the parents. Our unwillingness to invest in the future is inconceivable.

Being a teacher IS A GIFT. Not just anyone can be good at it… let alone great at it.

"I could be a teacher - it's easy!" With all due respect, Aunty, you can't even handle your own 3 children

I have known several people say they might want to teach. Those same people, while qualified in their areas, could not teach me. These areas included: coding, wiring, a dash of chemistry, taxes, and a few art concepts. Teaching is not just knowing how to do something, it's the ability to show someone else in a way they can understand.

My mom retired and became a sub. They call her EVERY DAY. And all she can say is how under-resourced they are, how they don't support the staff they do have, and how sad it is to see how hard being in schools is anymore. Pay our teachers. Support our teachers! They have our future in their hands 40+ hours a week amd we act like that's nothing amd everything at the same time.

That and the parents these days. When students used to get in trouble the parents would ask, “What did my kid do wrong?” Now it’s, “What did the other kid do?” Absolutely no parent support. I get so tired of it.

My sister literally just got fired from her third grade teaching job. She was a first year teacher, given minimal support, and had students with severe behavioral issues. She was overwhelmed and stressed. They didn’t even wait until the end of Fall term, she didn’t even make it to Veterans Day.

Not just diminishing their skill set, but adding to their stress level as they now have to teach an overcrowded classroom while helping overwhelmed, under prepared co-workers figure out what the heck they're doing.
