This lively piece by João Pernambuco is an example of the choro-maxixe (instrumental Brazilian tango) that originated in Rio de Janiero. Pernambuco was a well-known composer and guitarist who based his career in Rio and this is one of his most famous works which was published in 1926.

The title of the piece is generally translated as ‘Sounds of Bells. The word "Carrilhões" has multiple meanings in Brazilian. João Pernambuco has been cited as referring to a kind of waggon pulled by bulls in the countryside of Brazil and that his inspiration was the squeak sound of the wooden wheels against its iron spindle. An interesting thought when you listen to it.

The video starts with the mechanical clock based 5 bell chime of Norwich Cathedral.

I’ve included chaffinch, robin and starling song in the winter sun as their calls seem to echo the same exuberance of the piece.
